Howard Sultan Rasheed, PhD, made his transition on Saturday, April 27, 2013. Born February 3, 1953 in Chicago, he was predeceased by his parents Howard Lawrence Lee and Kathleen Phillips, and brother Leonard John Lee, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Linda Upperman Smith, brother Michael Phillips, MD (Cleo), sister Hattie Lee Williams (Samuel); daughter Candace Harriman (Steve), sons Derick Rasheed (Yoko), Mikail Rasheed, PhD, Hassan Rasheed, PhD (Hanni), Robert Ross, Christopher Ross (Bridget), and 8 grandchildren. He leaves a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins, a very special friend, Chris Baker; numerous former students, mentees, friends and colleagues.
He earned a PhD from Florida State University and was an associate professor of Management in the UNC Wilmington Cameron School of Business at the time of his passing. He was active in the Tauheed Islamic Center and the 100 Black Men of America. He was an extraordinary man with a kind, loving and gentle spirit who found much joy in living, learning and teaching.
A celebration of his life will be held at noon on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, in the UNC Wilmington Burney Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Howard S. Rasheed Scholarship at UNC Wilmington, 601 S. College Road, Wilmington, NC 28405 or to the Tauheed Islamic Center Building Fund, 721 Castle Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.
