On Monday, February 18, 2013, Ivan James LeBlanc, Sr., 85, passed away, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington, NC. Ivan was born on April 19, 1927, in Breaux Bridge, LA., to the late Leonard and Noelie Lewis LeBlanc. He was formerly married to Gussie McClammy LeBlanc and, from this holy union, three children were born.

Upon moving to Wilmington, N.C., in January of 2008, Ivan became a parishoner at St. Mark Catholic Church.

Ivan served in the United States Marine Corp for nine years. He was a lifetime member of the Montford Point Marines (1942-1949). On June 27, 2012, he received the Congressional Gold Medal at the Emancipation Hall, United States Capitol Visitor Center, Washington, DC; this is the highest Civilian Honor the government bestows. Ivan received a Certificate of Recognition from the Wilmington City Council, of the City of Wilmington, NC, signed by Mayor Bill Saffo, dated July 10, 2012, and he also received a letter of Recognition from Governor Beverly E. Perdue, dated August 02, 2012.

Ivan is survived by his son, Ivan James (Evelyn) LeBlanc, Jr., of Waco, TX; daughter, Barbara (Wayne) Holmes, Sr., of Wilmington, NC; stepson, Mervin (Tammy) LeBlanc, of Brooklyn, NY; brother, Andrew (Renella) LeBlanc, of Breaux Bridge, LA; sister, Mary A. Crockett, of Brusly, LA; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; godchild, Lawrence Abraham; special friends, Tony and Tracy Smith, and Ken and Michele Stoneman; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family is receiving friends and relatives at the home of Mr. LeBlanc's daughter, Barbara (Wayne) Holmes, Sr., 1230 Sherman Oaks Drive. Wilmington. The family will also receive friends and family for a final viewing, from 7 pm until 9 pm, Thursday evening, Feb, 21, 2013, at Dunn Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Burgaw. The Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 11 am Fri., Feb. 22, 2013, at St. Mark Catholic Church, 1013 Eastwood Road, Wilmington. Interment will follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans' Cemetery, Jacksonville.
