James "Berry" Lucas, 58, of Wilmington, NC, passed away Friday, January 4, 2013, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was born in New Hanover County on June 24, 1954, son of James Floyd Lucas, Jr. of Carolina Beach and the late Harriette Hall Lucas.

In addition to his father, Berry is survived by his loving wife of thirty years, Rebecca "Becky" Lucas; children, Amber and Brandi; grandchildren, Anthony, Alexa, and Ryleigh; brother, Floyd Lee "Buddy" Lucas; sister, Lucia Raynell Lucas; mother-in-law, Ruby Pepper and husband Howard; many cousins, aunts, uncles and friends, and his twelve year old canine fishing-mate Sadi who just loved to accompany Berry on the "GrayRider" charter fishing boat.

Berry is remembered by his family as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He grew up in Carolina Beach and as a young man worked at the amusement park and concessions on the boardwalk and also delivered the Star-News. He was a member of the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and was a Life Guard at Carolina Beach. He lettered in soccer at John T. Hoggard High School and was a very skilled chess player. Berry later coached the girl's basketball team at the Presbyterian Church at the beach. He worked in home construction for many years in Wilmington, Carolina Beach, and the Porters Neck area and was generally considered a "jack of all trades." He was an avid NASCAR (#3 Dale Earnhardt ) fan and loved the UNC-Tarheels. Most especially, Berry loved being out in the ocean fishing on the "Gray Rider" with Sadi. He had been a Charter Boat Captain for over six years.
