JOANNE GARRETT GIBSON On May 13, 2018, Joanne Garrett Gibson passed away at age 76, after an extended battle with dementia. She will always be remembered by her husband, Mel Gibson, by their two sons Chris (Lisa) and Garrett (Katy), by her five grandchildren Isabelle, Madeline, Emma, Gwen, and Asher, by her four brothers William, Herbert (Mabel), Rogers (Donna) and Wayne Garrett (Debbie), and by her two sisters Joyce Nelson (Michael) and Sue Canoy (Ray). Joanne was a native of Durham, where she was a cheerleader and homecoming queen at Northern Durham High School. Her sense of family was as deep as the ocean and she was a true Mom to everyone who knew her. She was a strong believer in education, the first in her family to attend college. A cheerleader at Western Carolina University, Joanne began a story-book romance with the star basketball player that happily ended in 54 beautiful years of marriage. After receiving her undergraduate and master's degree, she taught public school for more than 30 years. She nurtured every child that passed through her classroom as if they were her own. She was an active member of the Alpha Kappa Delta Sorority and was a long time fixture at the Canasta tables at Topsail Beach. A celebration of her life will be held at Hampstead United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at 11am, Reverend Skip Williams presiding. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 10am until the service hour. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her honor to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Dr. Wilmington, NC 28401 or Hampstead UMC Building Fund 15395 US Highway 17N, Hampstead, NC 28443.
