Joseph Lynwood Ashley, Jr., "Joe", 71, of Castle Hayne, NC, died Monday, January 14, 2013, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was born on September 12, 1941, in Columbia, SC, the son of the late Joseph Linwood Ashley and Dorothie Steele Ashley.

Joseph was a lifelong resident of the Wilmington area and a graduate of New Hanover High School and Wilmington College. He also attended Cape Fear Community College and Miller Motte College. Joe was a dedicated worker beginning jobs very early: Colonial Store in Hanover Shopping Mall, loved working at the Lumina at Wrightsville Beach, City Optical, and Corning. He retired as a boiler operator from Occidental Chemical (formerly Diamond-Shamrock) after thiry-two years, where his second family of co-workers and friends remained near and dear to his heart. One of his favorite past times was boat rides on the Cape Fear towards Island Creek with his sons and family. Joe was a kind and generous man with a "Big Heart" and a giving spirit. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a loving and caring father, grandfather, brother and friend.

Surviving are two sons, Rod Ashley and wife Sylvia, and Shaun Ashley; three grandchildren, Joseph, Jacob and Erika Ashley; one sister, Dorothie A. Johnson and her husband, Ira J. Johnson; a nephew, Robert K. Johnson and wife Cora; and a niece, Dorothie L. Willson and husband John W. Willson, V.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Friday, January 18, 2013 at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel. A graveside service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday at Oleander Memorial Gardens.
