JULIA CAMPBELL ALLEN
Julia Campbell Allen, 84, passed away Thursday, April 7, after a brief illness. Ms. Allen, who resided at the Kempton at Brightmore Assisted Living Facility, was a native of Bladen County who spent most of her adult life in the Washington, DC area, but retired to Wilmington almost 20 years ago.
For almost two decades, Ms. Allen was private secretary to famed Washington defense attorney Edward Bennett Williams. Three marriages by Ms. Allen ended in divorce. Her life in retirement revolved mainly around gardening, reading, watching classic movies and enjoying nature.
She was born July 24, 1926, in Bladen County, to Lonnie Lawrence and Laura Johnson Campbell. She is survived by two sisters and two brothers: Joyce Campbell Dowless of Elizabethtown, Doris Campbell Romanowski of Dallas, TX, Laurence Everette Campbell of Jordanville, NY and Don Campbell of Dayton, OH. She had numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. An older sister, Ruby Manning of Yazoo City, MS, died in 2003.
Ms. Allen was given a "green burial" at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens in Wake Forest, NC, on Friday, April 8. Family members were in attendance but Ms. Allen had requested no funeral or burial service.
