Katharine H. Riddell ("Kay"), 98, of Wilmington, NC, formerly of Glen Cove, NY, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2013, at Wilmington Health and Rehabilitation Center with family by her side. Kay was born in Great Neck, NY, on October 27, 1914. She was predeceased in death by her husband Thomas W. Riddell (1976) and by four brothers and three sisters.

Kay is survived by her daughter, Diane Ferrara and husband, Charles; granddaughter, Deborah M. Kutner; younger sister, Elizabeth Hauck and special friend, Judy Wyatt, all of Wilmington, NC. In addition, surviving in Glen Cove, NY are her brother-in-law, Peter Kurtin and extended family member, Michele Kutner.

Kay attended the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in NYC and worked for many years as a stenographer for the City of Glen Cove, NY before retiring at the age of 70. In her leisure time she could be found lovingly tending to her garden and African Violets or creating beautiful crocheted items. Kay was proud to have shared her knowledge of crochet with her daughter, granddaughter, and friend, Judy.

A self-described "tough old bird" Kay was fortunate to have been able to live on her own until the age of 95. Over the last three years, just as she had lived her life, Kay maintained her tenacity and grace while struggling with dementia and terminal illness.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Wilmington Health and Rehabilitation for their loving care during Kay's final three months. Each person there treated her as though she were their own family. In addition, sincere gratitude is expressed to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice representatives that cared for Kay during her final days, offering support, guidance and compassion through Kay's final moments.

No local services are planned. A graveside service will be conducted at a date yet to be determined in St. Paul's Cemetery, Glen Cove, NY.

Memorial donations may be directed to either Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC, 28401 or North Shore Animal League America, 25 Davis Avenue, Port Washington, NY 11050.
