LT. COLONEL HAROLD J. ANDERSON Lt. Colonel Harold J. "Andy" Anderson, age 79, was 'Promoted to Glory' on March 18, 2014 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born on December 9, l934 in Jonesboro, AR, the son of the late Brigadier Harmon B. and Ruby M. Wood Anderson. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mrs. Major Ruth (Pete) Costas. After graduating from John Marshall High School in Richmond, Virginia, he later graduated from State Teachers College in Salisbury, Maryland. It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Shirley Grant. Together, they entered The Salvation Army Training College in Atlanta, Georgia and were commissioned as Officers in June, 1956. They served as active officers for nearly 44 years, giving leadership at the College For Officer Training, several Corps appointments and numerous Administrative positions in the USA Southern and Western Territories before retiring in Wilmington, NC on January 1, 2000. In retirement, "Andy" continued to serve for 13 years as Community Relations Director for The Salvation Army in Wilmington. "Andy" will always be remembered for his life of love and service to God and mankind. His contagious smile truly reflected the joy of the Lord in his heart and the fulfillment of his meaningful ministry in The Salvation Army. "Andy" has been a Rotarian for many, many years and currently was a member of the Wilmington Central Club. Recently, he received his pin for 23 years of perfect attendance. Being an avid musician, he delighted in being a part of the International Fellowship of Rotary Musicians and attended many International Conventions around the world, promoting and encouraging other Rotarians to get their clubs "SINGING" during the weekly meeting! He organized and directed the first Rotary World Choir that sang during the Interfaith Service at the International Convention in Los Angles, California in 2008. "Andy" is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Shirley; a daughter, Major Melody (Roger) Coulson of Columbia, South Carolina; a son, Michael Anderson, of Wilmington; his brother, H. Ben (Phyllis)Anderson of Simpsonville, South Carolina; his sister, Miriam Anderson of Issaquah, Washington; four grandchildren: Lt. Christopher (Cristina) Coulson of Clarksville, Tennessee; Christy Coulson, of Charleston, South Carolina; Chelsea Anderson of Wilmore, Kentucky; Katelyn Anderson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; three great grandchildren: Matthew, Michaelah and Micah Coulson of Clarksville, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of life service will be held at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel in Wilmington, NC at 11am on Friday March 21, 2014. Visitation will be at the mortuary from 10:00 a.m. Friday until the service hour. Following the service in Wilmington, an interment service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday at the Snow Hill Cemetery in Snow Hill, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to The Salvation Army Wilmington Corps, P.O.
