NANCY MAE HECK Nancy Mae Heck passed away peacefully on June 14, 2014 after a 17 year battle with cancer. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 20, 1949 to Richard Heck and Ida Mae Heck (nee Schweitzer), both of whom predeceased her. Nancy was a devoted teacher - inspiring students first in the Detroit Public schools then moving to the Philippines, Okinawa and finally Kaiserslautern, Germany as a teacher to children of servicemen and women, ending in 2007 with 30 years of service. Nancy lived for every moment and in October 1978 while living in the Philippines she adopted her then infant daughter Kristin to share those moments. Her travels took her to many Asian and European countries. Many of those trips were with visiting family members - parents, siblings, aunts, cousins and nephews. When Kristin married in 2002 and had her own family they joined in her travels. Nancy's many interests included bowling, TOPS, water aerobics, singing in her church choir in Germany and in Wilmington, and quilting. She shared her love of quilting via the many quilts she made for family members - wedding quilts and baby quilts and many others. As an active member of the Quilters by the Sea Guild of Wilmington she regularly made and donated quilts to various charities. She also started a new program within the guild to make chemo caps and scarves which are now regularly donated to the Zimmerman Cancer Center. She regularly gathered with her sister, sister-in-law, cousins and close friends for quilting weekends and quilt guild events in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New York and North Carolina. She entered three quilts in the just concluded NC Quilt Symposium. The quilt show included 213 quilts entered by quilters from 7 states. Nancy's 'Bears on the Beach' quilt won an Honorable Mention award in the category Large Wall Hanging Duet. She loved life and the people who shared her life but her first love was her family, especially as devoted "Nana" to grandchildren Katelynn, Kennedy and Nicklaus. Nancy is survived by her daughter Kristin Scott (nee Heck), husband Chris, her three grandchildren, sister Jean Baumert (John) of Bloomington Indiana, brother Keith Heck (Cheryl) of Racine, Wisconsin and many cousins, nephews and nieces. A funeral service will be held 11am Wednesday June 18, 2014 at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 612 South College Road. The family will receive friends from 7pm until 8pm Tuesday June 17, 2014 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by mail to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202 or online at The family would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the caring staff and volunteers of the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCareCenter for their love and support in Nancy's final weeks. Condolences to the family at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel
