WILMINGTON, NC -- Patricia Cartier Kress, age 85, passed away very peacefully at home surrounded by family on Thursday, February 14, 2013. Born in Passaic, New Jersey, Pat was the fifth of the eight children of Alfred B. Cartier, Sr. and Cecelia F. Cartier. Pat grew up in Rutherford, New Jersey, attending St. Mary's High School. She married Herbert W. Kress (Major, USMC, Retired) on September 13, 1952. From 1952 until his retirement from the Marine Corp in 1967, Pat and Herb moved their growing family around the country to various duty stations. Wherever they traveled, Pat never failed to set up a warm loving home for her cherished family. In 1967, Pat and Herb moved to Tehran, Iran, where Herb was the Field Representative for Research Triangle Institute's (RTI) operations in country supporting the Government of Iran. Between 1967 and 1972, Pat, Herb, and their children traveled extensively through the Middle East, including within and across Iran, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, and Israel. They were also able to travel throughout Europe and the Far East.

In 1972, Pat and Herb moved their family back to the United States, settling in Cary, North Carolina. From Cary, they moved north to Oakton, Virginia in 1977 where they spent ten years and greeted the birth of the first four of their eleven grandchildren. In 1992, Pat and Herb retired to Duck, North Carolina where they enjoyed twelve great years surrounded by family, including seven additional grandchildren, and dear friends. In 2005, Pat and Herb came full circle back to the Camp Lejeune, North Carolina area and settled in Wilmington where two of their six children lived. Pat was a member of St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. Pat lived a full and wonderful life. She lived it with great grace, dignity, style, and faith. She raised six incredible children all over the world with unconditional love, strength, and support. She will be forever loved and missed by her family and friends.

Pat was predeceased by her parents, Alfred and Cecelia; her brothers, Alfred, Gerald, Robert, and James; and her sisters, Marie, Joan, and Eva. She is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, Herb, and her six children: Pam Kress and her husband Tom Kriksciun of Fairfax, VA; Kevin Kress and his wife Penny Pruitt Kress of Uruguay; Cindy Kress and her husband Chris Mattern of Greenville, SC; Missy Kress and her husband Dan Weldon of Wilmington, NC; Sharon Kress of Westfield, NJ; Tom Kress and his wife Karen Kress of Silver Spring, MD; as well as eleven grandchildren: Alex Kriksciun, Eva Kriksciun, Michael Kress, Abigail Kress Montgomery, Blakely Mattern, Sam Mattern, Sam Weldon, Patrick Weldon, Ryan Barker, Conor Mattern, and Sara Weldon.

Visitation will be held Friday, February 22, 2013 from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm at the Vander Plaat Colonial Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, New Jersey 07410. A funeral mass will be held on at 10:30 am, Saturday, February 23, 2013 at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 488 Saddle River Road, Saddle Brook, New Jersey, 07663. Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park, 234 Paramus Road, Paramus, New Jersey 07652. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made in Pats name to the .
