CHESAPEAKE, VA - Dr. Richard Borden Gibson, 86, passed away February 6, 2013. Dr. Gibson was born in Concord, NC, and was the son of the late Richard P. Gibson also from Concord and Duralde B. Gibson from Wilmington, NC.

He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Harvard Medical School. He practiced as a Board Certified Thoracic Surgeon in Los Angeles, CA, for many years and was the Chief of Staff of Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center in Hawthorne, CA from 1984-1985. He was also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, The American College of Chest Physicians, and a member of the Long Beach Surgical Society.

Dr. Gibson served in the US Navy during WWII and again during the Korean Conflict as a flight Surgeon.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia F. Gibson, also a NC native and his daughter Virginia Stalvey and his son-in-law Tom Stalvey of Chesapeake, VA.

The family will receive friends at the home of Linda Privette from 10am - 12pm on Saturday, February 16, 2013, and a gravesite service will follow at 2:00 pm at Oakwood Cemetery in Concord, NC. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
