RICHARD C BOYLAN

Richard Cortelyou Boylan, 85, passed away at Champions Assisted Living in Wilmington on Monday February 11, 2013. Born in Newark, NJ, Dick was a US Army veteran and graduate of Rutgers University, class of 1952.

He married Mary Salisbury on June 10, 1950 and they had 62 adventurous years together. After working for Miller Chemical and FMC Corp. for 15 years, Dick spent the last 22 years of his career in marketing and management at Union Carbide Corp., of which 20 years were spent in Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand. Dick's work responsibilities required travel throughout the Asia Pacific region which he loved, especially to Burma and Indonesia. He became an avid collector of Asian antiques and made friends everywhere. Dick and Mary retired to Chapel Hill in 1986, moved to Wilmington in 1994 and later to Brunswick Forest in Leland. They got involved in every community, were inveterate walkers and continued to travel overseas whenever possible.

Dick was an active volunteer in Wilmington, including 10 years with Meals on Wheels. He was a board member of The Lower Cape Fear Historical Society, The New Hanover County Arboretum Foundation and served as a member of the WHQR Community Advisory Board. He never met a stranger and had an enthusiastic zest for life until Mary died in May 2012.

Dick was also preceded in death by his brothers William and John. He is survived by 3 children and 7 grandchildren: Richard Jr. and Ellen Boylan and children Mary Ellen Laughnan of Wilmington and Robert Boylan of Cullowhee, North Carolina; Douglas Boylan and children Anne Marie Neely and Andrew Boylan in Ohio; and Nancy and Tal Ball and children Annie, Connor and Christopher Ball in California.

The family would like to thank all of the care givers at Plantation Village, the Davis Community and especially the staff of Champions Assisted Living. Thanks also to Dr. Leo Warshauer, MD, who cared for Dick for many years.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church On-the-Sound on April 6 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Hanover County Arboretum or Meals on Wheels.
