Wallace, Jr. and his sister Mary P. Fox. Bill spent his early years between Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach where he loved everything the beach had to offer - swimming, fishing, and body surfing. Bill attended New Hanover High School and graduated from Fishburne Military School. He went on to North Carolina State University for a short time before joining the U.S. Army Air Force. He became a Second Lt. Pilot in the USAAF and at the age of 18 became the youngest man in his class to receive his wings. He was trained in B25, B24 and B29 aircraft. During that time he travelled around the world as Vice President of Technical Sales and Vice President of Engineering and Product Development. He was particularly fond of Australia and South Africa. Bill loved flying and soloed at the age of sixteen. He eventually owned two of his own aircraft. After retiring, he moved back to Wrightsville Beach where he continued to enjoy the ocean, golf and singing in the choir at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Bill was known for his gracious hospitality and was always ready to lend a helping hand to his friends, neighbors or any stranger he met - usually over breakfast at the Middle of the Island, where he was affectionately known for years by all the waitresses as Mr. Wallace.
