WILLIAM D. WALLACE "BILL" William D. Wallace, "Bill", 88, of Wrightsville Beach, NC died Saturday, October 26, 2013. Bill was born in Wilmington on February 27, 1925 to Mary Rivenbark Wallace and Oliver Arrington Wallace. He was the youngest of four children and is predeceased by his parents, his brother Oliver A. Wallace, Jr. and his sister Mary P. Fox. Bill spent his early years between Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach where he loved everything the beach had to offer - swimming, fishing, and body surfing. Bill attended New Hanover High School and graduated from Fishburne Military School. He went on to North Carolina State University for a short time before joining the U.S. Army Air Force. He became a Second Lt. Pilot in the USAAF and at the age of 18 became the youngest man in his class to receive his wings. He was trained in B25, B24 and B29 aircraft. He served for two years before being honorably discharged in October 1945. He returned to North Carolina State and graduated in 1949 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. In 1949, he moved to Chicago where he worked for W.H. Miner and then Cardwell Westinghouse over a 41-year career. During that time he travelled around the world as Vice President of Technical Sales and Vice President of Engineering and Product Development. He was particularly fond of Australia and South Africa. Bill loved flying and soloed at the age of sixteen. He eventually owned two of his own aircraft. After retiring, he moved back to Wrightsville Beach where he continued to enjoy the ocean, golf and singing in the choir at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Bill was known for his gracious hospitality and was always ready to lend a helping hand to his friends, neighbors or any stranger he met - usually over breakfast at the Middle of the Island, where he was affectionately known for years by all the waitresses as Mr. Wallace. He is survived by his wife Diana C. Wallace, his son David Wallace of West Hartford, CT, his granddaughter Molly Wallace of Denver, CO, his brother James E. Wallace, Sr. of Wilmington and his beloved dog Sugar. He is also survived by his three step children: Christine Unsicker Delbridge of Heber City, UT; Suzanne Unsicker McCormick (William) of Portland, ME; David Unsicker (Missy) of New Bern, NC and his step grandchildren Carly Delbridge, Jack and Fiona McCormick. Bill is also survived by four nieces and five nephews. Funeral services are scheduled for 11am on Wednesday, October 30th at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 16th & Market St. Visitation will take place at 10am in the church parish hall. A reception will follow. The family wishes to thank the staff of New Hanover Regional Medical Center Rehabilitation Hospital for their compassion and loving care and support of Bill and his family.
