Mushtaq H. Khan, MD, 72, of 143 Tarpon Drive, Holden Beach NC, died Saturday morning, February 23, at Novant Medical Center after an illness of 10 days. Dr. Khan was a retired general surgeon having practiced for more than 30 years in Brunswick County. He was known for his gentle and caring nature.

Dr. Khan received his formal medical training in India, England and Scotland. His surgical residency was completed at Kings County Hospital in New York City and New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington NC.

Prior to practicing surgery in Brunswick County, he served two years active duty in the United States Air Force where he was chief of surgery at Shaw Air Force Base.

After serving two years on the City Council in Holden Beach he developed a passion for classic automobiles and fishing. Dr. Khan enjoyed competitive fishing tournaments in the Carolinas. His most noted achievement was third place in the US Open King Mackerel Tournament in Southport.

Surviving are his wife Martha Sink Khan of the home and son, Dr. Phillip David Khan, of Temple, Texas. Survivors include four brothers; Dr. Muktar Khan, Dr. Mahmood Khan and Altaf Khan all of Switzerland; Dr. Abid Khan of Toledo, Ohio; and, brother-in-law, Dr. David W. Sink Jr. of Hendersonville, NC. Also surviving is nephew Matthew Sink of Holden Beach and niece Christy Fleming (Mark) of Greenville, SC; and special little buddies Corbin Sink, Tally Fleming, Walker Leavitt, III and Joshua Fleming.

The family would like to thank all their friends for the kindness shown during Doc's illness. Also, a special thanks to the ICU staff at Brunswick Novant Medical Center.

Memorial service will be held Thursday, February 28, 10:30 A.M. at the Holden Beach Chapel. Visitation will immediately follow the service.
