Gladys Horne Haggins, 86, of Middle Sound, Wilmington, NC, left us to be with our Lord on Thursday, March 21, 2013.
Gladys was a member of Middle Sound Advent Christian Church serving the Lord as a Deaconess, superintendent of Sunday school, teaching Sunday school classes, and a beloved member of the Middle Sound Community, since moving from Bolivia, NC, in 1982. Everyone who went into Jeba's Store fondly knew her as Grandma. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Gladys' delicious cakes will also be missed, especially her birthday and wedding cakes.
Gladys was born May 17, 1926, in Sampson County, and was the daughter of the late William Joseph Horne and Lillie Jane Bullock Horne. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years; Samuel Pope Haggins, a baby daughter; Grace, brothers; Pete, Ivey, Ernest, JB, and Charles, and sisters; Agnes, and Virginia.
Gladys left to cherish her loving memories her devoted and loving children William and wife Carolyn Haggins of Wilmington, Robert and wife Judy Haggins of Bolivia, Jane and husband Gene Alberti of Wilmington, Lillie and husband Chris Ward of Wilmington, 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren. Also many wonderful and loving nieces and nephews including a very special niece Jean Atkinson and her husband OJ. Gladys leaves a legacy of warmth and love behind her. She always showed a great love and kindness for her family and friends. Her loved ones celebrate her life even while mourning her death. Gladys will be missed, always loved-yesterday, today, tomorrow, and forever.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2012, at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home at 11:00am, with Reverend Wilbur Horrell, Obby Atkinson, and soloist Mary Dowless. Burial will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens.
The Family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, March 22, 2013, at the Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Middle Sound Advent Christian Church Building Fund, or Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
