On Sunday, May 5th, 2013, at around 3:00 p.m., Phyllis Baldwin Chisholm departed this life at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter after having fought a very brave 2-year long battle with pancreatic cancer. She went Home peacefully, surrounded by family and friends.
Phyllis was born June 5th, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York, to the late Dorothy Nance Baldwin and Ernest Baldwin Jr. She moved to Greensboro, North Carolina after high school to attend North Carolina A&T State University, graduating Cum Laude in 1976 with a degree in Early Childhood Education.
After graduation, Phyllis moved to Wilmington, North Carolina to pursue her passion for teaching. There she met, and subsequently wed, Henry Alfred Chisholm. To this union three children were born: Makesha Regina - the eldest, and twins Nicole Tiffany, and Sean Evan.
Phyllis was employed by the New Hanover County school system for over 30 years - teaching first, kindergarten, and then second grade. Towards the end of her teaching career, Phyllis took the time to continue her education, and utilized those skills at a Brunswick County school where she ended her career teaching fifth grade math and science. Phyllis touched many lives, and leaves a strong legacy of valuing continuous learning and education.
Phyllis was a member of St. Luke A.M.E. Zion Church for many years.
She leaves to cherish and honor her memory, a devoted husband, Henry Alfred Chisholm; three children, daughter Makesha Chisholm Phillips of Atlanta, Georgia; daughter Nicole Tiffany Chisholm of Atlanta, Georgia; son Navy CTR3 Sean Evan Chisholm who's stationed overseas; two grandchildren, twins, Ari Jade Marie Phillips, and Jaxon McKenna Phillips; and son-in-law William Edward G. Phillips. Phyllis had no brothers or sisters.
