SALLY A. SULLIVAN Sally A. Sullivan, Associate Professor Emerita, English Department, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, died at the Azalea Health and Rehabilitation Center on July 2, 2013 of natural causes. She is survived by her sister, Lynn Sullivan of Ramseur, North Carolina; her two daughters, Kathleen Maddox of Fayetteville, Georgia, and Camela Carstarphen of Butte, Montana; a grandson, Clint McMurrey, a great granddaughter, Fallon Leigh McMurrey, and yet to be born great grandson, Thomas Finley McMurrey, both of California. She will be missed by many in the community, including the caregivers at Azalea who showered her with love and attention in the last few months of her life. An extra special thanks to Latoya, Tameca, Willie, Tonya, Nickel, Gail, Van, Cory, and Wendy. Sally, born to the late William Goodman Sullivan and Mildred Wells on July 6,1936, completed a doctorate at the University North Carolina at Greensboro. For most of her professional career she taught at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, writing books and mentoring students . Though Sally taught all aspects of the English discipline with zest, excellence, and creativity, Sally is a poet. In the spirit of her mentorship she has established a scholarship at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in name of the Sally Sullivan Award in English. Donations should be noted as such and sent to Aron B. Johnson, 601 S. College Road, Wilmington NC 28403-5925. Please come help us take joy with zest in Sally's life and accomplishments at the Church of the Servant, 4925 Oriole Drive, Wilmington, NC. There will be a wake at the church on Friday July 19 from 5 - 7 p.m. for sharing, reading, and visiting. A service will be held at 10 a.m on Saturday July 20.
