MARY ZAVOCKI GILMAN September 8, 1914- January 28, 2014 Mary Zavocki Gilman was born Sept 8, 1914 in Seymour, Connecticut, one day after her parents Fedora and Michail arrived at Ellis Island, NY by steamer from Russia. She was raised with her brother and two sisters in Buffalo, NY. Mary was on her high school swim team and she was a competitive diver. She loved music and was a member of the Riverside Presbyterian Church choir in New York City. Mary married Walter Gilman on May 16, 1939. Walter was a lieutenant in the New York City Fire Department, Engine 213. The couple resided in Bronx , NY and had two sons, Lawrence and Mark. After Walter retired from the FDNY, he and Mary moved to their summer home on the Ten Mile River in Dover Plains, NY. Mary moved to Wilmington in 2001 to be closer to her son Larry. She is survived by her two sons, Lawrence Gilman of Wilmington and Mark Gilman of British Columbia, as well as seven grandchildren : Jennifer Gilman West, Todd Gilman, Greg Gilman, Jessica Stitt, Jeremy Gilman, Ilya and Kostya Gilman, and 7 great -grandsons Zachary, Harrison, and Henry West, Brett and Ryan Gilman, Trevor and Donovan Gilman. She is predeceased by her husband Walter and her brother Joseph, as well as her sisters Annie and Natalie. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and much loved by all those whose lives she touched. The family requests no flowers or gifts. A service for family and friends will be held in the chapel at First Presbyterian Church.
