MARY CATHERINE FORSYTH THOMAS Mary Catherine Forsyth Thomas, 86, of Southport, NC, passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 1, 2014. Mary was born in Baltimore, Md, on April 18, 1927, to the late Katherine Hilgers Forsyth and Thomas Forsyth. Mary is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Silvestri, and a son, Pardo ("Pete") Silvestri, both residing in California, a sister, Irene Moore of Northern Virginia, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Mary graduated from Whiteville (NC) High School in 1944. She spent much of her career in the federal courthouse in Washington, DC, where she was an accomplished court reporter. Also while in Washington, she was employed as a nanny to several children of government officials. She was member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 42 years. Mary was beloved wherever she went and could frequently be found volunteering at her local library. She was a voracious reader and a cat lover and leaves her beloved cats, Pete and Louie. Mary loved the beach and ocean and her ashes will be scattered and forever with the sea. In lieu of a service, close friends and relatives will gather in remembrance of her life on Saturday, February 8, 2014, from 2 PM to 5 PM in the community room at Windtree Apts where she lived at 1229 N Caswell Av. Memorials may be made in her name to Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue (SOAR), 3376 St. Charles Place, Southport, NC 28461 (soar-nc.org).
