SPENCER S. SWINTON Spencer S. Swinton, age 76, a resident of United World College for the past six years, passed away in hospice care at home with family on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 in Montezuma, NM. He was born on August 25, 1937 in Elgin, IL to Spencer Swinton and Lydia Landwere-Swinton. He was united in marriage on August 9, 1969 with Janet Marie Francis in Wichita, KS. He received his B.S. in Math and Philosophy in 1959 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, his M.A.T. in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 1960 from Harvard Graduate School of Education and PhD Mathematics, Education and Statistical Analysis in 1973 from University of Chicago. A lifelong educator, Spencer was a Research Psychologist for Educational Testing Services for most of his career. He was a Master Teacher in the School of Graduate Education at Harvard, and worked in Tanzania with the Government Teachers College. Spencer was active with the American Educational Research Association, the National Council on Measurement in Education, Phi Delta Kappa and the National Assessment of Educational Progress. He held a patent in binary light-Sensitive responders. He lived in Morrisville, PA and Wilmington, NC prior to moving to Montezuma, NM in 2008. In Morrisville he served on the School Board and the Zoning Board, and was active with a chamber music group and with Habitat for Humanity. He had a keen appreciation for nature, music and gentle humor, and enjoyed the United World College Community. He is preceded in death by his parents: Spencer and Lydia Swinton. He is survived by his wife Janet Swinton, his three children Jennifer Swinton (Stephen Craig), Naomi Swinton (Rick Mobbs) and Daniel Swinton; and four grandchildren Spencer Broadus Mobbs, Ada Swinton, Calliope Swinton and Maxwell Craig; and his brother, David Swinton (Barbara Swinton) and niece Rebecca Swinton. Memorial services will be held on Friday, April 4, 2014 at 4:00 pm at the Dwan Light Sanctuary on the United World College Campus. Cremation has taken place.
