MARY ELIZABETH DREW Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Poole Drew, 76, of 448 Jabbertown Road went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 20, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the parents of Charles Clayton and Helen Surma Poole. As a very young child Mary visited the home of her father in Southport, NC and moved permanently to the city she cherished dearly around 1950. She attended Southport High School and she always said, "I got to Southport as fast as I could." Mary truly loved Southport with all her heart. Mary Poole met the love of her life among friends, a handsome young man, Billy Drew, and they were married July 26, 1953. They shared a wonderful marriage together for the past 60 years in this community. To this union, they raised four children, Charles Thomas, William Russell (Rusty), Ronald Lee, and Judith Devel. She retired due to her sickness in 1996 as the office manager of Dr. LC Hammond Chiropractic Office. Years prior she worked at Harrelson's IGA and managed and operated the Casey's Restaurant at Saw Dust Trail Intersection. Mary loved her family unconditionally. She was their biggest fan and followed her family through out their school years in sports and activities. She NEVER missed a ball game or sporting event by her family. She was always the loudest, most supportive, fan in the stands. She was an Umpire's nightmare. It was said that when the Drew boy's were playing ball at Taylor's Field, you could hear Mary Drew hollering all the way down to the Whittler's Bench. For many years she was a member of the "Blue Angels" Bowling Team, bowling many perfect games, and winning many championships. She was an avid card player, loving the games of Japanese Rummy and Pinochle. Mary was also one of Elvis Presley's biggest fans. Mary and her husband Billy, were saved in the late 1990's and became members of the Southport Baptist Church. After her salvation, Mary's life changed dramatically. She was preceded in death by her parents, a very special cousin that was like a brother to her, Paul Leone, and one grandson, Baby Boy Drew. She leaves to cherish her memory and legacy, her husband William T. (Billy) Drew who has been so devoted to her every need during her lengthy sickness of 16 years. Three sons, Charles T. (Stephanie) Drew of Supply, NC, Rusty (Bonnie) Drew of Wilmington, NC, and Ronnie (Stephanie) Drew of Winnabow, NC. One daughter, Judy (Chris) Willetts of Bolivia, NC. One Sister, Barbara Ann Poole Sellers (James) of Southport, NC.
