Emerson Howard "Shorty" McCullen, 68, passed away on Saturday, June 26, 2010, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He is survived by his son, Kelly Emerson McCullen and wife, Erin, and his sweetheart of over 30 years, Jean Brown, and their little dog, Ginger. He leaves behind four brothers and sisters: Judy McCullen Harrell, Durwood McCullen, Dale McCullen and Joy McCullen Horrell, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie McCullen and Pauline Boyette McCullen and his brother, Ray McCullen.
Shorty was born in Sampson County on May 10, 1942, and graduated from Hobbton High School in 1960. He was a former part-owner of Edge Cabinet Co. in Clinton, NC. He moved to Topsail Island in 1979, where he worked in construction until his retirement in 2004. He was co-owner of the Sea Scape Motel and Jean Brown Real Estate, Inc. in Surf City.
He loved to deep sea fish, cook pigs and work in his flower and vegetable garden and watch sports. He was a friend to all who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at 6 p.m. at the Surf City Soundside Park, at the swing bridge in Surf City.
