Lt. Col. Joseph Francis Dunn, Ret., 95, of Wilmington, NC died Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Davis Health Care.

Joe was born on July 14, 1915, in Pittsburgh (Swissvale) Pennsylvania, the son of the late Edward J. Dunn and Mary Estella Cain Dunn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Deans Brown Dunn and grandchild Clifford Dunn.

He graduated in 1940 from The University of Pittsburgh. He also received graduate degrees from the University of Minnesota and Loyola College in Maryland.

Joe was a military officer (Regular Army of the US Army). He entered active service via the University of Pittsburgh's ROTC Program. His active service extended from 1940 until 1968. His foreign duty assignments included seven years in Europe (England, France, Germany, and Italy) and five years in Asia (Japan, Korea, Okinawa, and Vietnam). Upon his Army retirement he became a professor in the Cameron School of Business at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

His community service included, but was not limited to: The Wilmington City Council (member), Wilmington Transit Authority (chairman), Lower Cape Fear Historical Society (chairman) and County Library Advisory Board (member).

Joe was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Wilmington Civitan Club, L'Anioso German Club, The Cape Fear Country Club, Carolina Yacht Club, The Senior Men's Club, and Military Officers Association of America (SENCland Chapter).

Joe is survived by his four children: Joseph F. Dunn, Jr. and wife Mary of Hinesville, GA; Ellen Wells and husband Harold W. Wells III of Wilmington, NC; Madeleine Bowers and husband Michael M. Bowers of Edgefield, SC, and Thomas E. Dunn and wife June of Oakton, VA. He was affectionately known as "Pop Joe" by his five grandchildren, Harold W. Wells IV and wife Meredith, J. Stevenson Wells and wife Helen, Lt. William D. Bowers and wife Kelly, Jackson M. Bowers, Julie Deans Dunn, and four great grandchildren, Liza, Jane, William, and Rob Wells.

Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Saturday, January 8, 2011 in Oakdale Cemetery by Rev. Bob Kus.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Friday, January 7, 2011 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold W. Wells III.

Memorials may be made to The Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401, or to a charity of one's choice.
