George Bakalar, 86, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2011 in Wilmington, NC. He was born on May 16, 1925, n Hocking Iowa, son of the late Mike and Margaret Bakalar.

George served in the US Navy and retired from the United States Government in 1981. He was an active member of All Saints Anglican Parish for over 30 years. He loved the outdoors, especially spending time in his garden. He was a loving husband, father, "Pop", and friend to everyone that he met. He was a caring man that would do anything to put a smile on the faces of his family and friends.

Those cherishing George's memory are his loving wife of 66 years, Frances Bakalar of Wilmington, NC; his daughter Elizabeth Coleman and husband Jerry, of Wilmington, NC; his granddaughter Lynn Horton, of Morrisville, NC; his grandson, Michael Carter and wife Karen, of Wrightsville Beach, NC; his great grandchildren, Carly and Owen Carter; his sister-in-law, Louise Bakalar, of Wilmington, NC; his god-daughter, Anna Holland and husband Rob, of Cary, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his brother, Eugene Bakalar.

Visitation will be held from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Wednesday,December 7, 2011,at the Coble Ward- Smith Funeral Home, 3915 Oleander Drive Wilmington, NC 28403.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday December 8, 2011, at the All Saints Anglican Parish, 2623 North College Road, Wilmington, NC 28405 with Father David Haines officiating.

Graveside service will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 1311 Shipyard Boulevard, Wilmington, NC 28412.

The family gratefully acknowledges the special Angels of the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Center, his home care nurse Karen Hales, friends and neighbors for the care and comfort they provided George and the family in his final weeks.

As we celebrate his life on earth and are comforted by his peace in Heaven, we are reminded of his strength, courage and faith that will keep on living forever in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC, 28401, or All Saints Anglican Parish, 2623 North College Road, Wilmington, NC, 28405.
