RALEIGH -- June Matthews Hickman of Raleigh, NC, passed away on May 1, 2012, after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. She was born in Clinton, NC on March 4, 1967, to Grace and David Matthews, Jr. June is survived by her daughter, Lauren Grace Hickman, age 12.
June attended Clinton City Schools through the 10th grade and South Brunswick High School, graduating in 1985. She received a BS in Accounting from UNC-Wilmington in 1989 and earned her MBA from Pfeiffer University in 2005. She also held a commercial building contractors license.
At the time of her illness June was employed by Progress Energy as Director of Transportation and Information Services.
Surviving in addition to her daughter are her parents, brother John Matthews and wife Bo Kim Matthews of San Diego, CA; sister Amy M. Frink and husband Steve Frink of Bolivia, NC; a special niece and nephew, Hannah and Mason Frink; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins who were very supportive of her needs throughout her illness.
Also June leaves behind to cherish her memories many wonderful friends in Raleigh who helped her in every way possible. Because of their generosity, June was able to remain her home and spend precious time with her daughter. To these friends June sends her love and eternal gratitude.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm, Friday, May 4, 2012, at Rowan Baptist Church, 701 Rowan Road, Clinton, NC 28328. Visitation with the family will be one and half hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall. Service will be conducted by the Rev. Ray Phillips and Rev. Michael Shook. Graveside services will be held immediately following the service in the Clinton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a
or to one of two charities established in June's honor. The JUNA foundation, www.junafoundation.com, will fund the purchase of books and supplies for summer reading for any child needing extra help, or donations may be made to the scholarship fund: June Matthews Hickman Endowment c/o Brunswick Community College, P.O.
