REV. ALAN J. DASH

The Reverend Alan J. Dash, retired priest of the Diocese of Raleigh and Sacramental Minister at UNCW Catholic Campus Ministry, died early Thursday morning, May 17, 2012, in Wilmington, NC.

Fr. Dash was born in 1937 in the Bronx in New York, educated in Massachusetts, Kentucky and Arkansas, and ordained by Bishop Vincent S. Waters for the Diocese of Raleigh in 1967. He served at St. Gabriel Parish, Greenville; St. John in North Wilkesboro; St. Ann in Charlotte and St. John the Baptist in Ahoskie. He served as Diocesan Director of Vocations in the 1970s, and since 1974 he was active in Campus ministry, serving at North Carolina State University and UNC-Wilmington. In 1986 Fr. Dash became the first Catholic Campus Minister at UNCW when he opened the house on the corner of Racine and College Acres Drive.

As a college student, Fr. Dash converted to the Catholic Church from Judaism and discerned his vocation not long afterwards. "I just wanted to work with people," he told one interviewer. "There are millions of other ways you can do that, but I thought this is what I'm supposed to do with my life. I haven't been wrong."

Fr. Dash is survived by his brother, Joel Mannheim of Orlando, Fla., his niece, Melissa of Orlando, Fla., his nephews, Joel, Jr. and David Alan of Orlando Fla., and several cousins.
