Donald Ray Hammonds, 70, of Wilmington, NC, died Thursday, May 24, 2012, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington, NC.

He was born in Wilmington, NC, October 4, 1941, a son of the late William Ray Hammonds and Ethel Gooden Hammonds.

Mr. Hammonds was a professional welder for over forty years and retired from Mundy Welding Company. He enjoyed fishing, boating, and was an avid NASCAR fan, with his favorite driver being #3, Dale Earnhart, Sr. Mr. Hammonds was a veteran of the United States Army.

Surviving is his wife of forty-five years, Ida Marie Tyson; also four daughters, Darema Morgan of Leland, Tara Lee and husband Kenneth of Rocky Point, Donyel Dresser of Charlotte, NC, and Kristy Lewis and husband Dary, Jr. of Southport, NC; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a brother, Roy Lee Hammonds, and two sisters Carolyn Whitley and Merline Gupton.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel, 1617 Market Street, Wilmington, with the Rev. Andy Ottaway officiating. Interment will follow in Galeed Church Cemetery, Bladenboro, NC.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 1:00 p.m. Tuesday until the service hour.
