BERNICE BATTS WALTON

Bernice Batts Walton, 95, of Wilmington, NC, (Masonboro Sound Community), passed away at home on Tuesday, June 19, 2012.

She was born in Pender County, NC, on December 5, 1916, a daughter of the late William Thomas Batts and Mollie Sanders Batts. Her husband of 48 years, Herman Walton died in 1988.

Mrs. Walton graduated from Topsail High School, Class of 1935. She was a long time member of Masonboro Baptist Church and achieved 28 years perfect attendance in Sunday School. Mrs. Walton was well known and respected in her community.

Surviving are three daughters, Marie W. McKeithan (Allen), Linda W. Garrett (Dicky), and Ruth W. Lear (Malcolm); three sisters, Mazie Shepard, Sabra Shepard, and Elizabeth Edens; a brother, Wayne Batts; seven grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Siblings preceding her in death were Elma B. Hudson, Woodie Batts, Waymouth Batts, Namon Batts, and Francis Batts.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Masonboro Baptist Church with Dr. Gordon Wright, and her son-in-law, Dr. Allen McKeithan officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Grandsons and great grandsons, Dwain McKeithan, Luke McKeithan, Mason McKeithan, Walt Cannon, Wil Cannon, Allen Croom, Lee Spearman, Joe Waggoner, and Seth Waggoner will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to Teresa Hicks, Stephanie Boyles, and the entire Lower Cape Fear Hospice staff for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Masonboro Baptist Church, 1501 Beasley Road, Wilmington, NC, 28409, or Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC, 28401.
