MITCHELL ELLIOTT STEPHENS

Mitchell Elliott Stephens, age 78 of the Smyrna community of Whiteville went to be with his Lord on Friday, March 15, 2013 at Columbus Regional Healthcare System in Whiteville.

Final rites will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday at Worthington Funeral Home with Reverend Ted Riedel and Reverend Troy Goss officiating. Interment will follow in the Smyrna Baptist Church Cemetery, Whiteville.

He was the husband of the late Elizabeth "Lib" Brown Stephens and the son of the late Normie and Lora Purvis Stephens. He was also preceded in death by two siblings, Veatus S. Goins and Genair Stephens.

He was a retired farmer/tobacconist and building inspector for the Columbus County Building Inspectors Office. He also worked along with his wife "Lib" managing the Whiteville License Plate office until her retirement. Mr. Stephens was a member of the Columbus County Shriner's Club and 32nd degree Mason.

He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Ramona S. Long and her husband, Guy of Chadbourn; a son, Terry Elliott Stephens and his wife, Melody of Ocean Isle Beach; two sisters, Elois S. Bass of Whiteville and Merle Baxley of Monroe; a brother, Taft Stephens of Fayetteville; three grandchildren, Stephen J. Ellis, Maggie Stephens, and Matthew Stephens.

Memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Lifecare Center, 206 Warrior Trail, Whiteville, NC 28472 or to Camp United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 776, Shallotte, NC 28459.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn.
