JOHN AVERITT VON OESEN, SR. John Averitt von Oesen, Sr. 85, died Sunday, January 12, 2014, at New Hanover Regional Hospital. He was born February 26, 1928 in Wilmington, NC to the late Mangels von Oesen and Lena Pearl Averitt von Oesen. He graduated from New Hanover High School in 1946. He served in the United States Army from 1946-48. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1953 with a B.S. in Business Administration and was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi. He began his career in Wilmington at GMAC and remained in the automobile business until his retirement as President of V. O. Chevrolet in Burgaw, NC. He was President Emeritus of The Hanover Seaside Club, Wrightsville Beach, NC, having served 50 years as Club President, Secretary-Treasurer and Board Member. He was a member of the Burgaw Rotary Club where he had perfect attendance for 33 years, also serving as President and named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of UNC-Chapel Hill Alumni Association, serving as county chairman. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marilyn Miller von Oesen, his children, Mr. John Averitt von Oesen, Jr. of Burgaw, NC, Mrs. Frank Mackey (Anna Jane) Hughes of Baltimore, Maryland, son-in-law Frank Mackey Hughes, Jr. of Baltimore, his grandchildren, John von Oesen Hughes, of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Frank Mackey Hughes, III of Baltimore, Maryland, and Anna Jane Miller Hughes, of New York, New York. A memoral service will be at 11:00 AM, Thursday, January 16, 2014 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 12 N. Sixth Street, Wilmington, NC. Officiated by the Rev. Mark Opgrand and the Rev. John Misenheimer. A reception will follow at Keever Hall. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
