Peter King Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 16 to Mar. 20, 2011.
King, Peter J. Age 83, of North Oaks, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. Preceded in death by his mother, Rebecca Savopoulos Kalafatas and father, John M. Kalafatas; brothers, Metrophanis and Nicholas; and sister, Bessie Papas. Survived by his loving companion, Ann Fankhanel, his sons, Bill (Beth) and Russell; his grandsons, Kyle, Ryan and Michael King, William and Daniel Graham, and Kellin and Alex Sandeno. He is also survived by sisters, Demetra Bowers and Ann Larouche; sister-in-law, Helen Kalafatas; many nieces and nephews; and a large group of loving, devoted friends. Peter was born in Boston, Massachusetts on February 11, 1928, the fifth of six children. He graduated from Boston College where he played football, was the founding editor of its first business school newspaper and a founding member of the New Boston Committee. Peter had two careers - first in finance and manufacturing management, holding positions of increasing responsibility including director and senior officer of three New York Stock Exchange and two NASDAQ listed corporations. After 25 years, he began his second career by forming an equipment leasing company, King Capital Corporation. King Capital, through its leasing subsidiary Sunrise International Leasing Corporation, became the 50th largest leasing company in the United States and was cited twice as one of the fastest growing companies in Minnesota. After 30 years, King Capital phased out of leasing and Peter vowed to donate all of his proceeds to charity, founding the Peter J. King Family Foundation. The Foundation has provided major funding to "bricks and mortar" projects for the Salvation Army, United Hospital, United Family Medicine Clinic and Residency Program and Union Gospel Mission. The Foundation has also provided funding for education and health care facilities in Tanzania, Africa, to which he traveled frequently. Peter also took an active role in his community as a director of the North Oaks Home Owners Association. His recreational interests ranged from boating, scuba diving, tennis and golf, to being a worldwide traveler, avid gardener, accomplished woodworker and opera enthusiast. Funeral service 11 AM Monday, March 21 at INCARNATION LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4880 Hodgson Road, Shoreview. Visitation 4 - 8 PM Sunday, March 20 at HOLCOMB-HENRY-BOOM-PURCELL FUNERAL HOME, 515 Highway 96 West at Mackubin, Shoreview and beginning at 10AM at the church before Monday's service. Memorials preferred to the Salvation Army and United Hospital Foundation. www.holcombhenryboom.com 651-482-7606

Russell,

I am so sorry for your loss. I have so many wonderful memories of Peter and can hear his laugh as I write. Over time I have come to appreciate the lessons he taught all of us about being true servant leaders. Peter was one who lead by example - thank you for the blessing of knowing him.

You are in my thoughts and prayers

Russell and Family,

I so enjoyed getting to know Peter the past 15 years at the cabin and at his wonderful holiday celebrations. It was clear from our first meeting that Peter was a man of uncommon qualities. He was a gentleman in the truest sense of that word and a gracious host.

I'll never forget my "test drive" last summer at the lake. When we returned from that once in a lifetime thrill, I ran back to the patio to thank him. He just winked, smiled, and said "anytime!"

The past couple years, I began to learn about his dedication to giving and his care for those less fortunate. In a world so desperately short of real role models, your father taught us all a lesson about how to live. I pray that you can find a measure of comfort in his lasting legacy, his long life admirably lived, and the faith that he's now where he belongs.

In memory of a man who I think of quite often. I had close to 20 years working for Peter and I can't even begin to cover all I learned from him! He had high expectations but was extremely loyal to his employees and cared deeply for us.

My deeptest sympathy to you Bill and Russ!

Dear Beloved Neighbor and Friend: We know you haven't really "left us," you've merely "transitioned." Memories of your kindnesses and outpourings of generosity stay with us for the time being, and until we are, once again, "neighbors." Our love and warmest regards to Bill, Russell, and Ann. Realtors told us North Oaks was an "investment opportunity," and neighbors who loved, cared for, and looked after one another proved them right!
