A sweet, funny memory of Nathan when he was a boy. He told my two sons, San Francisco was going to fall into the Bay. My boys believed it for a long time and nothing I said would dissuade them because Nathan was right. It was funny then and sweet now. I hope all of you will have many wonderful memories of your dear Nathan today.

Just read of Nathan's loss in the St. Thomas magazine. We were college classmates and Lisa Olchefske (Gilbert) and I always enjoyed hanging out with Nathan. Leah was the roommate of our good friend Ann Biales at St. Kate's. We teasingly called her Princess Leah and told Nathan that meant he was Luke Skywalker. He was a great guy. Much sympathy.

It is amazing how many people Nathan touched and how deeply considering the fact that he had to spend almost full time for many of his years struggling to stay alive. He, of course, was supported by a loving and devoted family. All in all each and everyone of them is deserving of the highest of human credit. Nathan by example has taught those of all ages who knew him that life and its ups and downs is a precious thing to be forever cherished. Nathan was the bravest and most courageous person I have been privileged to know in my long life.

I talked with Nathan alot while I worked at the YMCA in Edina. He talked alot about the Tour de France, about what a great race it was. I have been hooked ever since. I think of you during the time of the tour and will always remeber and continue to think of you during the race. Thanks.

Nate was a truly wonderful man. His ability to connect with people on a personal level was a real gift.

I initially met him as one of my brother's close friends in high school. I was a grade below them. I had immediate respect for him for his intelligence, his kindness and his wit. I got to know him better in the following years as he also became friends of my group of friends in my class. He made friends easily. I came to admire him more and more since then.

There are two personal moments I particularly remember. One is a conversation, philosphical, about life, engineering, and other topics at my brother's wedding. The conversation was interrupted as I was wisked away, as Best Man, when the bride was being kidnapped. We meant to continue it later. We never did.

The other moment was at the visitation for my dad. Nate came in spite of clearly not being well. He was pulling his oxygen tank with him and wheezing as he breathed. He made a point of telling me something very kind and complimentary. While his words meant a lot, what stands out is that he came to provide condolence and comfort at a time when we were hurting in spite of his own suffering.

His words were profound and wise and spoke volumes. His actions were even louder. I'll never forget him.

To all of the Malbys,
I am so terribly sorry for your loss! From the time I transferred to Holy Angels (the same year as you, Leah) I could see what an amazing, inspirational guy Nathan was. He was fun. He was kind, empathetic, and lived life to the fullest. In fact, I think he affected more people, loved life more fully, and made more of an impact on the world around him in his 44 short years than most of us do in much longer lifetimes. May you find comfort in the love of family and friends, and in your memories of a wonderful son and brother. God bless.

My thoughts and prayers to the Malby family for your loss. I was priveledged getting to know Nate better post AHA days through his good friends Paul Pope, Jeff Olson and Dean Bjorkstrand. Usually, our get togethers involved playing a little poker...and play he did. I will always remember Nate's wit, sense of humor and friendly jabs (especially when losing!) He was a great man and even greater inspiration.

My prayers to the Malby family on the loss of your son and brother, Nathan. As a former teacher at Holy Angels, it was my privilege to have taught all the Malby children in my French classes. Nathan stands out as smart, funny, and genuine. One memory stands out: Leah and Nathan participated in one of the trips to Europe that I organized. Brother and sister were very close. A loss for all of us.

It is hard to argue against the idea that ones worth can be gauged on the impact we have on those around us. In Nathan's case, his worth is tremendous and his loss significant. I don't claim to have known him personally besides passing him in the halls and sharing a few words and a couple laughs. He was a bit of a celebrity at AHA and his legacy is strong. Peace to all those who feel his loss and thanks for the time he was given to create such a legacy.

Nate and Me

August 9, 2011

It has taken me a few days to remember almost 30 years of memories that dart
through my head. Many of which I wouldn't remember without Nathan's help.

Nathan to me was a grounding rod, a mirror, a memory data base, my budda on
the hill, Socratic philosopher, die hard party animal and bachelor on elimi-date.

I always respected Nate in high school and he helped me with advice. Post
high school I lived out of state for 15 years. While I resided out of state
- I kept in touch with Nathan every once in a while. But when I returned
to the Midwest in 2000, our relationship blossomed into a threesome. I
rarely saw Nate without Sara Callahan Larsen. Sometimes other people would
join our threesome. So yes, I start out with the elimi-date I am sure that
is what you wanted to know most about.

We often went out for a dinner and a play with several girls and Nathan as he liked to call it... "elimi-date". Sometimes there would be another guy thrown in but it definitely was not as fun as with just the girls.

Often our discussions would be about relationships. He would provide very
sound advice. Mostly by asking questions and making us think hard about the situation. He remembered every boyfriend, every conflict and he would bring these up years later. With his intensity and ability to be 110% present -
He became a mirror back into my life. He remembered things I said thereby
keeping me honest and not hypocritical.

Okay when I say he remembered everything - I do not exaggerate. Once he
recalled that after I got a poor grade on Sr. Diane's calculus test that I
was crying so hard that I blew snot bubbles through my nose with my head
sideways on my desk while I was looking at him. AND he was right - some
things are better left unremembered.

He often reflected on the world and would have many deep thoughts about
them. He would sometimes bring up conflicts or issues in his own life - but
more as a platform for discussion. What is the philosophy behind the
conflict? Not that he didn't have an opinion; he did like to play devils
advocate on many topics. What should he do? How should he handle it? He
liked to play out each scenario before he took action.

Now to the die-hard party animal. When there was a social gathering,
reunion, oscar party he was there with bells on. He was a constant, a rock,
never afraid, never sad, never too happy but always glad to see me.

So what made Nathan as great as he was to me? Was it his disease? Would he
have been the same with it? Or would he have been just another
non-rememberer living in the moment. It is hard to know.

I read many of the posts that other people have written and I see that

Nathan was a rock, mirror, philosopher and budda to many people not just me.
We were very blessed to have Nathan in our lives.

Dear Malby Family, Nate was a wonderful person who never complained. We would talk about our health issues a lot in the recent years and he always made me feel so much better. He always asked about my daughter - we are both better for having Nate in our lives. I will always remember how warm and welcoming Nate was when I started at Holy Angels in the 10th grade. You lived the hours of your days with a sense of life that was affirming and spirited and always kind. As the years passed, your energy inspired those around you. Your smile was a warm light that greeted everyone and those you touched became better people. You lived your life deliberately, always moving with an upbeat purpose. Maybe long ago you had sensed something ephemeral in yourself, something abbreviated about your destiny. If that ever made you sad, you concealed it from everyone with a smile. You held your head high. You lived each day well and honorably and without regret. You were a role-model for how a person should live.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Malby family during this very difficult time.
