Glenn Gostick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 20, 2011.
Gostick, Glenn F. "Gos" Well known baseball historian extraordinaire, Glenn "Gos" Gostick, died at age 83 on March 15, 2011 at his home in Montrose, CO. Born to Glenn & Bessie (Borseth) Gostick, he lived in north Minneapolis from birth until his move to Colorado in 2009. After graduating North High in 1946 he joined the Army to play baseball in Japan winning the All-Pacific Area Championship. He attended the University of Minnesota graduating 1952 in physical therapy and 1961 in physical education with post graduate work in athletic injuries. A lifetime devoted to sports he worked for the Minnesota Twins; umpired college, high school, and amateur baseball; was advisor and coach to both the Swedish and Dutch national baseball associations in their organizational infancy; was an instructor, asst. coach, and trainer at the Univ. of MN and Case Institute of Technology, Ohio; player and coach in semi-pro baseball leagues in MN and SD. As a trainer he worked with the U.S. National Jr. Hockey Team in Sweden and Poland; with the Jr. North Stars, Minnesota Fighting Saints, NY Yankee Minor League, and many others. As a physical therapist he worked at North Memorial Hospital, Sheltering Arms Hospital (polio) and orthopaedic groups in Minneapolis. Gos was well known for baseball statistics, all hand written, and often sent them to friends and family members as a "hello" with no letter of explanation. He was a walking encyclopedia of baseball trivia and published a book on high school coaching. A dapper dresser, in tweeds and plaids, he loved the holidays and was "Mr. Santa Claus" in red and green holly pants and candy cane bowties. A bachelor, he enjoyed his six nephews and nieces and their families. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Helen Oren and Lillian Read. At his direction there will be no service or memorial and he donated his body to the Univ. of CO medical school. As many knew, his greeting to everyone was, "Give me a letter of the alphabet" and he would quote from Ogden Nash's poem "Line-Up from Yesterday." You could continue to give him a new letter, but he said he would charge after three. So one last baseball quote to sum up Gos, the letter "I", "I is for Me, Not a hard-hitting man, But an outstanding all-time, Incurable fan."

Glen was a good friend and teammate of my father John "Lefty" Caulfield when my father played ball out there in God's country years ago. Glenn visited my father in Cambridge, Ma. every so often (think Harvard/Yale games). Glen was a hot ticket and a kind soul. My father passed away 4/3/09 so they are up there making each other laugh. Requiescat in Pace, Glen. JC

I had Mr. Gostick for back to back conditioning courses at the U of Minnesota in 1967. It was in preparation for going into the Navy. The class format was 15 minutes of stretching and calisthenics, plus an endurance/aerobic portion consisting of a 2,5 mile run or, running up and down the old "Memorial Stadium" steps or the Harvard Step Test[stepping up and down on benches for 5 minutes]. Each day would feature[?] a different endurance exercise.

Mr Gostick would keep time by pounding with a baseball bat. Toward the end of the exercise when the legs were burning to the point where they might catch fire, he'd yell out:"are you getting sore?". "Well that's your little red wagon!"

Needless to say, I was ready for basic training. He was a good man who made many contributions to others

He would have made a great Marine Drill Instructor.

Gos was one of the greats of the game...actually "games." The only trainer the Minnesota Fighting Saints ever had. Former trainer of the Minneapolis Lakers. A superb baseball man. And a good guy. Once you met him, you never forgot him. RIP, Gos.

I loved Mr. Gostick, in minneapolis he came to our clinic the Native American Community Clinic. He was a lovable, grouchy patient who would bring his book, and always tease me about Left Handed People!! We missed him when he moved..And I pray his last days were good... I will lay some tobacco and pray for him. J. Day

One of the most memorable and colorful individuals that I had the good fortune to work with as a physician for the Fighting Saints.

My Dad, Jerry Smith, and Glenn were high school adversaries (North and Washburn), Gopher teammates and long time friends.

The last time I saw Glenn was at the dedication of the Patrick Henry field and, true to his nature, who do you suppose was going to be not only the emcee but the umpire for the dedication game?

As kids, he regaled my sister and I with his rhyming and baseball knowledge and I was never ever able to stump him with any arcane bit of baseball trivia -- and I put some serious effort into it!

I especially chuckled at the reference to Glenn's short term status as the Twins official scorer. My Dad always said that, had he gotten to the majors, he could have hit .300 easy -- except if Gostick was the scorer!

Glenn was one of most principled and colorful characters that I'll ever have the privilege to have known.

Glenn was an outstanding coach and I was privileged to play for him on The American Legion baseball team. He was a friend, mentor, and was a possitive influence in my life. Goodbye my friend.

The most dedicated Baseball player I ever knew. He was always thinking! To him, baseball was a true science. Vern Schultz.(Gopher teammate)
