Christopher Lawrence Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 31, 2010.
Lawrence, Christopher T. Age 56, died on October 12, 2010 after a year's struggle with cancer. His mother, Dulcie Lawrence, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Ruu-Tian; sons, Sam and Peter; father, Van Lawrence and siblings, Gabrielle, Joseph, Matthew and Rebecca; nephews, Justiin Gourlie and Thomas Lawrence; niece, Keegan Gourlie and many heartbroken friends. Chris was born in Missoula, Montana January 27, 1954, lived three years in Tacoma, Washington, then moved to Minneapolis in 1960 where he began school at Kenwood elementary school. He is a graduate of West High, Minneapolis, Lawrence University, Appleton Wisconsin, and the University of Minnesota Carlson School where he was awarded the degree of Master of Business Administration. He and fellow student, Ruu-Tian Chang of Taiwan, were married after graduation. Their two sons, Sam and Peter were born in Minnesota. When the boys were ready for school the family moved to Taiwan so they could learn Chinese and the Chinese culture. Chris brought the boys back to Minnesota every summer for years and would spend those months as Minnesota kids together. Chris and Ruu-Tian's company, ChangLawrence.com, flourished, time passed and they found a rewarding life in Asia. Chris was a member of the Board of Governors of the Taipei American Club and was a competitive and graceful athlete, excelling at tennis, golf and skiing. In time, he too became fluent in Mandarin and was active in his church, The Taiwan International Church, serving as Treasurer and member of the governing council as well as playing his drums every Sunday as part of the worship service. He was part of a group who organized and funded several trips to India with the Veda Ministries to deliver dental care to an impoverished community. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, Minneapolis, MN on November 3, 2010 at 12:30 pm. Memorials can be sent to: Reba Place Church, Attn: David Janzen, 737 Reba Place Basmnt, Evanston, Illinois 60202. Specify, Veda Ministries.

I remember many times of being crowded about 8 or 10 people in Chris and Larry's room in Plantz Hall, Room 101. What fun we had, and how amazing that we all managed to make it on to sophomore year. Ruu-tian, the boys and Chris'family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I just want to say to Ruu-Tian, Sam & Peter and the rest of his family that I am so, so sorry that this happened. I have so many memories of Chris over the years that I can not begin to recount them. I always enjoyed his company. It was a good time whenever Chris was around. It's a terrible loss for all his family and friends.

Chris was the first person I met as a Freshman at Lawrence University. He was in the room next to me in Plantz hall during our first term and became my roommate second and third term. I'll always remember him for his love of drums, ping pong and a fantastic sense of humor.

Chris and I were fellow residents at Plantz our freshman year and became friends. I spent summers in the Twin Cities during the middle 70's, and we spent many warm nights together, hanging out or at the golf course where he worked. I was so deeply saddened to read the Lawrence Alum magazine today to learn that Chris had passed away; I feel like part of me had gone with him. A few years ago, out of no where, an email arrived at my office from Chris, reaching out from our past. What a class act! I could still drive you to his home in Minneapolis. I take comfort that Chris grew up in a the type of home that is so rare today. I take comfort that Chris had a wife and family that I never knew, but know that he loved and loved him. My deepest condolences to Chris's family and all those who knew and loved him. By the way, I remember him with blond hair, like he looked in his early 20s.

Chris "gurkma" was a good friend and calculus (yuck!) study partner during freshman year at Lawrence U. Probably ate three meals a day together at Downer diner. Quiet, but funny. I will miss his presence on earth.

Chris was a wonderful guy & great classmate at West High School. He made it here to Minneapolis for our 30th reunion in August 2002, and seemed to really enjoy re-connecting with many of his classmates. We'll miss him!

My dear ex, Roxanne, alerted me today to this loss. I certainly never expected to outlive him, so vital and strong in body and mind.
To Van, his widow and children, to all his siblings, my wish for sweet memories that only sweeten over time.
