Hortense Shober Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 19 to Apr. 21, 2013.
Shober, Hortense Marie (nee Larson) Passed away peacefully in the presence of her children on April 17, 2013. Funeral service Monday, 1:00 PM, with visitation one hour prior at Chapel Hills United Church of Christ, 6512 Vernon Ave., Edina. Interment Spring Park Cemetery, Sandstone, MN. Honey (or "Tenny," as some knew her) was born November 16, 1917 in Sandstone, MN to Swedish/ Norwegian immigrant parents State Senator Adolph S. Larson and Helene Larson, the seventh of nine children in a family she revered all her life. She graduated with honors from St. Cloud Teachers College and took great pride in teaching elementary school in Wisconsin before marrying Army Major Robert H. Shober, also from Sandstone, in November of 1942. She and Bob remained a joyous team for 57 years. Honey was an accomplished classical pianist, an award winning duplicate bridge player, and a sharp handicapper at the horse races, a passion of Bob's she pretended to tolerate, but in fact enjoyed whole- heartedly. While raising her four children, she created a loving home for her family in one location after another as Bob's career with Great Northern/Burlington Northern advanced. Honey was a famously unflappable mother whose wisdom was rivaled by a whimsical, deadpan humor. Known to many of her children's friends as "Tunes," she played piano so beautifully that the music she made became a foundation of her family. Honey had a strong Christian faith throughout her life, and chosen hymns were a virtual soundtrack for her life. She is survived by her four children: Jane Harris (Denny), Washington D.C.; Elizabeth Shober (Fred), Edina, Robert Shober (Virginia), Los Angeles; and Peter Shober (Barbara), Missoula, MT; six grandchildren (Lisa Brenninkmeyer, Amy Rogers, Katie Little, Anamarie Shober, Jane Shober, and Steen Shober); eleven great- grandchildren, and wonderful nieces and nephews. Her piano is stilled, but her music lives on. www.Washburn-McReavy.com Edina Chapel 952-920-3996

My thoughts and prayers go out to this wonderful wife and mother.
Best wishes to the extended Shober family that I, unfortunately, do not see often enough

Dear Betsy and Family,

Thinking about you and sending my thoughts and prayers your way as you say good-bye to your Mom. The obituary told a great story of what a spirited woman she was. Although I didn't know your Mom I can hear the music of her spirit. God Bless.

Shober Family:

Please accept my sympathy at the death of Mrs. Shober. I only met Mr. Shober once at our newly purchased 44th Avenue office in Fridley. God Bless!

My Dear PALS,
I wish I could be there to share in all the wonderful stories about Tunes. She was an amazing woman and it was a bonus to know her through being your long-time friend. I smile when thinking about how loving and funny she was. And...what a bridge player! Please know that I am sending love your way as you begin the process of learning to live without such a wonderful mother.
