Laurence Daniel McCann

McCann, Laurence Daniel of Key Largo, FL, passed away at Catholic Hospice, Hialeah Gardens, FL on January 8, 2013 after a full life of 88 years. He touched the lives of many people, both personally and professionally. He was born on April 3, 1924 in Minneapolis Minnesota, the son of Elizabeth Moore McCann and Thomas A. McCann. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Thomas McCann and John McCann and sister Elizabeth Pritchard. Mr. McCann attended The Hotchkiss School, Lakeville, Connecticut, and graduated from The Blake School, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Yale University, class of 1945W. During World War II, he served in the US infantry in the Pacific Theater. Integrity was a cornerstone of Laurence's values, as well as his respect for people of all ages and personalities. His ability to share his many stories and humor was felt by all who knew him. In 1972, he founded ALLA Corporation, a money management firm he ran for 20 years until his retirement. He was an avid sportsman who loved tennis and golf, and boating on Lake Minnetonka. He was a devoted fan, cheering on his grandsons, the Minnesota Vikings, and the North Stars. He was a founding member of the Wayzata Country Club, and a member of The Minneapolis Club. For many years in Florida, he enjoyed the Key Largo Anglers Club, tennis at Ocean Reef and The Racquet Club and golf at Card Sound. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Claire Anderson McCann of Key Largo, and daughters Valerie Moore and husband Richard of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Elizabeth McCann of Hilton Head, South Carolina, Maureen Betancourt and husband Herbert of Grass Valley, California, Molly Ewald and husband Hiram of Charlottesville, Virginia and son Laurence McCann Jr. and his wife Susan of Edina, Minnesota. In addition, he is survived by six grandchildren Shannon Rovak, David Moore, Thomas McCann, Peter McCann, Meme Ewald, John Ewald and great- grandchildren Henry Moore and Nicholas Moore. A Mass in celebration of the life of Laurence D. McCann will be held at the Ocean Reef Chapel on Saturday, January 26th, 2013 at 2:00 PM.
