Lucille O'Donnell Obituary

Published by Star Tribune on Apr. 28, 2009.
O'Donnell, Lucille age 100, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2009. She was born Lucille Elinor Eytcheson on February 25, 1909, in Hayward, WI, one of 16 children. During her lifetime she lived in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, Florida, and Texas, depending on the era and the time of year. She was an avid reader, and loved to play cards and do crossword puzzles. Her favorite movies and TV programs were westerns and gritty dramas, and she was a big Clint Eastwood fan. At different times of her life she lived with various family members, and was always a joy to live with. She had a great sense of humor and was fondly referred by her sons-in-law as "Little Mum". She was never taller than 4'11", but she was always a bundle of energy. Even in her later years she was interested in politics and world affairs, and she once said that she had been a Democrat ever since she voted for FDR. She was preceded in death by her daughters, Chloe Bertram and JoAnne Nystrom. She is survived by a son, Jon J. King of Texas, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, all of whom fondly called her "Nanny". She will be remembered as a prayer warrior, someone who was always interested in the lives of her family, and kept their safety and welfare uppermost in her thoughts. She never complained about aches and pains, because she said no one wanted to hear about them, anyway. She wrote humorous and upbeat letters, which will be sorely missed. Even in her 90's her faculties were sharper then many people half her age. She was truly a "character", and almost everyone who came in contact with her felt a connection with her and loved to visit with her. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 8th, at Edina Park Plaza, 3330 Edinborough Way, 18th floor, at 1:00 pm. Please make memorials to www.meals-on-wheels.com.

Nancy, Joe, Kenna and Ellie,
I know how much Lucy meant to all of you and that you are going to miss her very much. You were lucky to have her in your life -- and she was so very lucky to have you in hers. My condolences on the loss of your beloved Nan.

I knew Lucille only vicariously through Carlye's recounting of her frequent visits to Minnesota. I heard about a remarkable, entertaining lady who lived life to the fullest all the way through her 100th birthday. She will be missed but will stay among us through fond memories.

Though I've never met Lucille O'Donnell, I've heard many wonderful stories about her from Carlye over the years. I can't imagine your grief, but I have a small sense of the gift you all enjoyed in knowing her and being loved by her. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
