Cummings, Mary Jo Age 59, went directly to heaven on Monday, January 28. She was a remarkable woman, a dedicated kindergarten teacher and a beloved daughter of Betty Cummings. So often I will be driving somewhere or doing just about anything, and something I see or hear reminds me of Mary Jo, and I cant help but smile or laugh. I have so many fond memories going all the way back to Christ Child School and how much joy Mary Jo brought to the kids there when she volunteered. Over the years our paths would continue to cross and she always made it seem like not a day had passed. I miss that. I always miss that every single time I drive by the house on Cretin, which is so often. I am holding on to many special memories, and never forgetting Mary Jo.

Mary Jo's smile, laughter, tough love, and simple words of wisdom will be missed in room 100 for years to come. All 3 of my kids had the privilege of having Mary Jo as a teacher. We are all better because of her and will never forget her. The picture is the morning class in 2011. She "sainted" both of her classes in the Pioneer Press that year, mailing each of them a picture and a quarter to buy the paper. Always giving.

Dear Betty and Family,
We are praying for your peace as Mary Jo smiles on you from Heaven.
Mary Jo first "studied" with our daughter Meredith as a second grader more than a dozen years ago and has been our family friend since. Just the week before she died she was helping us again as she generously agreed to do the flowers for a wedding for one of Meredith's friends even though it was the weekend of her big event, Twins Fest! We are so grateful to Mary Jo for all the wonderful lessons and gifts she has given our family over many years - she gave from her heart and soul. She inspired Meredith to be a teacher and we looked forward to Meredith learning from Mary Jo her secrets and special gifts for teaching young children. Mary Jo's selfless works and generous spirit live on in our hearts; she has truely inspired us!
All our love as you remember Mary Jo, Marty, Jody, Christine and Meredith Duda of St. Paul

Mary Jo will truely be missed by any child who struggles in their education. Her tenacity to instill confidence in children was a true gift that led them to succeed in school and beyond. My children were benefactors of her talent and care. Thank you Mary Jo.

Mary Jo was a great friend and teacher. From sharing her love of the Twins to sending me off to college with a college survival basket, she was thoughtful in everything she did. I was lucky enough to have Mary Jo as a teacher at SPA and she became a great friend to my whole family... a relationship that lasted long after our time together at SPA. The notes in this guest book are a testament to to the countless lives she touched. She will be greatly missed, but always remembered.

Ms. Cummings made my daughter, Rachel, feel like she was very special to her. She was very invested in all of her kids, even buying them books from the book fair and cotton candy at the Twins game. She was a generous and loving person who will be greatly missed.

Ms. Cummings so touched my son Nathan's life - words cannot express what she did for him - she helped him to get to the next level - 1st grade. She got him reading and tutored him last summer to make sure he didn't forget anything! They celebrated their birthdays together - his is July 5th hers the 3rd but they still did work after the cupcakes! She was a saint! Now that he is in 1st grade - I stil would stop in and talk to Ms. Cummings to get advice or update her on Nathan's great progress! I will so miss her!

Mary Jo,

It is hard to believe that all your passion has left us. You helped so many children learn to read and you let no obstacle get in the way. I think about all the years we worked together at SPA and the generosity and support you showed me when I faced hard times. Your light will shine on in all your former students.

My deepest condolences on your loss. I wasn't fortunate enough to have worked in Mary Jo's room at JFK, but I had firsthand knowledge of her generosity. In December, Mary Jo picked up the entire bill (anonymously) for the JFK paras' holiday luncheon. Just one example of what she did countless times, for so many. I marveled at her enthusiasm, energy, and amazing spirit. What a wonderful legacy Mary Jo leaves behind. God bless you all.

TO the Cumming's family...Mary Jo was Matt and Molly's kindergarten teacher. She was an AMAZING teacher when my kids had her (22 years ago)! She continued to be amazing to this very day! She cared deeply for EACH of her students and had the HIGHEST expectations...accepting each child as they were...

I had the privilege of working with Mary Jo andher kids every year for the annual field trip to McDonald Eye Care...something she started doing when Matt was in her class and continued for 21 years! She was scheduled to come in next week...I will not disappoint you Mary Jo...I will treat your kids with the same respect you did!!

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

God speed Mary Jo...see you at Spring training!

All of you will be in our prayers. God bless.

Dear Betty your loss is also our loss. I had the pleasure of helping you and Mary Jo with your banking needs for many year at the walk-up teller windows at Liberty State Bank. My brother Michael "Sammy" also passed away Monday 28th We had his funeral today. Sammy was a huge MN twins fan as well. We also chose Calvary for his resting place. I'm sure they will meet in heaven and have much to talk about. Two very LOVING people taken from us way to early in their lives. Rest in Peace

Ms Cummings, she was a force of nature, and it has been so hard on myself and my children to realize she really was mortal! My heart is sad to loose such a treasure. She has taught 3 of my 4 children in her class, with my daughter being in her afternoon class currently. She has left an imprint on myself and my children that we will not forget. Words cannot express the gratitude I feel for having her touch our lives. Thank you to Ms Cummings Mom (whom she talked about regularly) For sharing your amazing daughter with all of our children (and their parents), we are grateful to you, and extend our deepest sympathy for your loss!!!

I cannot think of ever seeing Mary Jo without leaving with a smile on my face. When our daughter Annie was 9, Mary Jo told her that if she left food for the Easter Bunny outside of the house then the Easter Bunny would leave treats there. Unknown to us, Annie left two carrots outside the back door. Sure enough, on Easter morning, there was an Easter basket outside the door and eggs scattered all around the yard. Annie called Mary Jo to let her in on the good news. A generous, passionate person, Mary Jo will be missed by all of us. Betty, you have our deepest sympathy and we hope you can take some solace in having raised such a wonderful daughter.

It is all said so beautifully here by so many. Obvious how this woman touched everyone she came into contact with. She truly lived her life doing God's work. Miss Cummings was one of the nicest and funniest people I have ever met. Although I didn't have her as a kindergarden teacher, you wouldn't know it because she made everyone feel like they were one of her students. That was just one of many qualities about her that I will never forget! I was lucky to have met such a wonderful person and she is going to be missed by so many people whose lives she touched. She will be greatly missed!

Every time I think think of Mary Jo I hear her laugh. She was always smiling and in a hurry to get to her next good deed. She spent everyday doing things for others, things she didn't need to do. She always went above and beyond. For example, she made us Easter baskets. They looked amazing and were stuffed full of great candy, a huge chocolate bunny, and a toy. They were above and beyond anything we thought we'd get for Easter. We were some very surprised and happy kids! We enjoyed her company at Easter brunch.
She always went above and beyond when doing things for others. She will be greatly missed.

February 1, 2013

Two of my 3 children had Mary Jo as their kindergarten teacher and I volunteered in the classroom during that time. She was so loving, positive and compassionate to her kids and always treated them as if they were her own. To this day if she saw them , she'd make a point to say Hi and find out what they were up to. She truly was a gift from God! Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Cummings family.

Mary Jo changed my life. I will never forget the first day I had her as a tutor, she made me cry. I was in third grade and was not used to her tough love approach. It was exactly what I needed however and for the next 7 years, once a week, I met with her. There was no time limit to our meetings. She would stay for hours if that's what it took for me to learn. She used to say, “You can't take your parents to college, you can't take me to college, so I'll sit here until you can do it”. I will never be able to thank her enough for what she did for me. It is because of her I am in collage and nearing graduation. On graduation day I am sure tears will be shed and once again it will be because of her. Rest in peace Mary Jo and thank you for never giving up on me.

Miss Cummings was one of the funniest and nicest people I have ever met. Although I did not have her as my kindergarden teacher, I knew her very well like most people who went through JFK. This is because she would talk to everyone no matter who you were and always knew how to cheer you up. She touched so many people lives and will always be remembered. Thank you for having such a lasting effect on my life Miss Cummings. You will be missed greatly by everyone.

Mary Jo, I am still in shock. I have oodles of wonderful memories of you. Every child in your life was your top priority. When I was in my school days, I never had you as a teacher, but you helped me in my extra classes I took at SPA, you pushed me to work hard and always believed in me.
I loved volunteering at your events at SPA, I loved our trips to the Dairy Queen, Barns and Noble, and to Best Buy to pick out a stereo for my mom for Mother's Day- remember wrapping that huge stereo on the back of you corolla in the wind? We were laughing so hard! I was so thankful on my 16th birthday when you offered me your corolla for my test- just so I wouldn't have to use our big family van. And, I passed! I loved how on Easter morning, year after year our front door was lined with Easter Baskets for me and my siblings, all filled to the max and wrapped in cellophane. I loved the way you laughed and tucked your hair behind your ear. Going to the Christmas sales with you, my mom and Deb to find gifts for our boys, you had everything all hunted out and you new just which stores we needed to check out. Mary Jo, you were so invested in everyone you knew.
As I read the other memories in your guest book, I am so humbled to know that you have treated everyone the same as me. You have always believed in me being the best I can be and I thank you for that. I miss you already so much.

Miss Cummings was my kindergarten teacher in 1990. She was one of the most amazing and kind teachers I ever had! She truly cared about her students. Dear Betty, Patty, Oona and Mike especially: I could not have been more surprised to read about Mary Jo's passing in the local Sun newspaper this morning than if the moon had just fallen from the sky! First of all, we are SO incredibly sorry for your loss. I wish my boys had known MJ better but they heard the stories over and over again.

We moved three houses down the street from the Cummings in 1969 and within it seemed like just a few days, Mary Jo was babysitting for me, my brother Doug and my sister Diane. I will never forget her serving us tuna fish sandwiches and spaghettios for lunch every day that first summer! We thought she was the coolest because my parents wouldn't do that!

The story I remember us laughing about most was my brother Doug slamming the front door and the clock falling in and electrocuting the fish. Mary Jo and I never failed to laugh like crazy about that, every time we told that story, a classic!! I know my brother, who beat her to heaven by 22.5 years, is glad to see her and it made me smile just to think about that. My mom, too! There is quite a party going on up in heaven right now, Betty and you can be so proud of what an impact this one fun-loving, positive, Christian woman had on so many. We remember her so very fondly. Thanks for sharing her with us. Praying for all of you with such a sudden loss.

I could not have asked for a better teacher for my son! In the short time they spent together, she made such a tremendous impact with her awesome sense of humor and fiesty spirit.

My son thought it was the coolest thing in the world that his teacher liked trains and loved her stories so much (and I loved hearing them from him)!

I have so many great memories of being Ms. Cummings' helper when my kids (Carlie and Joe - now 8th and 9th graders) were in her Kingergarten class, especially the hours putting up those paper chains on the ceiling that I believe her mom so lovingly made for the classroom - they were awesome. Mary Jo was an excellent teacher who loved her kids. She always taught her students that they could do things for themselves - she expected a lot because she knew they were capable of so much! I regret that I hadn't seen her in a long time. She will always be a big part of my memories of JFK and it make me so sad that she is not there. I will think of Mary Jo when I watch the Minnesota Twins, as I'm sure she will be cheering them on from the best seats in the house!

If you were lucky enough to have Ms. Cummings as your child's teacher, you know that her life's lessons will live on for years to come. I still hear our daughters repeat Ms. Cumming's famous quotes “Don't sweat the small stuff” or “You get what you get and you don't through a fit”. She had a true gift with children and could get the very best out of them. If there are truly angels on earth, and I believe there are, we just lost one on Monday, January 28th. Oh, how we wish we could see you “tomally”!

Betty, you and your family our in our thoughts and prayers, at this most difficult of times. My family and I got to know Mary Jo, as a teacher at St. Michael school in Prior Lake. She had our three oldest children in school and the fell in love with her, as my wife Cathy, and I did. A funny little story if I could, involved our twins who are now 32 years old. Katie and Joey we waiting at the bus stop, and as the bus approach, Cathy started to walk back home. Katie saw that Joey got on the bus and immediately run to catch up with her mother. When Joey told Mary Jo the story at school, Mary Jo called the house. Katie decided she no longer needed to attend school. Mary Jo arrived at our house a few minutes later to find Katie under her bed. As Mary Jo, pleaded with Katie to go with her back to school, finally Katie agreed, provided "Ms Cummings" would take her to the Dairy Queen after school. Katie, enjoyed that Dairy Queen treat that day, but also started her on that road of loving school. Ms Cummings we'll always appreciate you going that exile mile.

My grandson Kyle had Ms. Cummings last year and he thought the world of her. I had the pleasure of meeting her several times and she is the most caring and loving person I have ever been around. God welcomed a beautiful person to heaven but she left her mark here on earth. My deepest sympathies to you.

I am still in shock. Mary Jo was not only a wonderful teacher for my daughter, Finley, but a good friend when I needed to talk to about the everyday happenings in a teacher's life. She gave me some great advice and I always enjoyed stopping by her room. What a wonderful person! She will be missed!

Betty, we are so sorry for the loss of your amazing daughter, Mary Jo. She was an angel on earth for our family. We are shocked and saddened to hear about her death. It seems impossible for her to have passed as she was so full of love and engaged in life. She always had a story to share with us about you, her mom. She was very generous and went out of her way to help others. She was going to save us seats at Siena's graduation this spring. She helped our family not just by tutoring Siena but by making all of us better people...seriously. We will miss her so much. Sending you and your family love and prayers at this difficult time.

I am having trouble catching my breath having just read the obituary. My husband and I were just talking about calling Mary Jo this week as we like to catch up and fill her in on our son's exploits. She tutored him from 1st through 8th grade in reading and writing. Driving to Roseville several times a week and often refusing payment because she 'loved' Patrick so much she wouldn't take anything for her efforts. She taught him to read and write where others failed. More than that she gave him the gift of tough love and taught both him and I to stop feeling sorry for him as a dyslexic and instead simply work harder. Today I know she would be so proud of him as he has achieved the Dean's list at UMD in Philosophy. He owes so much of his success to her teaching but also her tough love approach. She use to tell him, 'Pat, your boss is never going to give you half of a workload because your 'special', so get over yourself and get to work'. That will be her lasting legacy for me and I will be forever grateful that we knew her. My condolences to all of her family, especially Betty, who I know she loved so much.

Mary Jo's heart knew no boundaries. I met Mary Jo at Christ Child School too many years ago to admit to. My life was never the same after that. I am so glad my son Nick was able to experience her joy for life, and her infectious laugh the few times they were together. Mary Jo had a way of making anyone she was with, feel like the most important person in the world. She left an indelible mark on anyone who knew her. We will all never be the same again. Be at peace, Jo.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, Betty, Mike and Patty.

We are deeply saddened at the loss of the Queen of our school, Mary Jo. My children were not in her class, but she touched us all with her kind and generous heart, passion for all she did and who she encountered, and her hearty smile and humor. It won't be the same without her. She leaves a legacy of generosity, kindness, and love...she put her heart into her kids and families. Our deepest sympathies to her mother, family, and friends.

Mary Jo was my son's teacher and my friend. Then she became the tutor to my goddaughter when she had cancer. She was an amazing lady. I know she is in heaven giggling with Rachel and catching up on everything. She special! She loved her mom more than anything on earth. She gave her life taking care of others always willing to give her last dollar to others to help the less fortunate. If you were lucky enough to have her for a teacher....you were one of her chosen forever!

I will miss you my friend!!!!

Ah, Mary Jo. What a gift you gave to all of us:students, parents, teachers, and friends. I sent many children to Mary Jo as a daycare provider-and she took them all under her wing. Say hello to Diane Keller for us-JFK has lost a really good one.

I couldn't have hand picked a better teacher to introduce my son to the ins and outs of gradeschool. Ms. Cummings loved and cared for all of "her kids" enough to tell them "No" when needed. She welcomed my younger son into the group on my volunteer days and treated him as if he was one of her kindergarteners. He loved going into her class and looked forward to the day that he too would be one of "her kids". She will be greatly missed.

Can't put into words how much JFK will not be the same. Such an advocate for the underdog. She loved her kids like they were hers! And at every book fair at school, she would whip out her checkbook and buy each and every child a book, so no one would feel left out. Most generous person I've ever met.

Ms. Cummings was my daughter, Sydney's kindergarten teacher this year. To say that she positively impacted her life just doesn't seem to capture what she truly meant to my daughter. My daughter loves school and loves learning, and I attribute that to Ms. Cummings. I spoke with her a week before she passed away and she gave me such great parenting advice. She had a way of calming a nervous mother and teaching me to help my daughter - all at one time. I saw the absolute LOVE she had for every one of those kids. What a blessing she was to all "her kids" and to my family. Sydney and I will miss you, Ms. Cummings. We will never forget you.

It would be impossible to exaggerate her impact on the Lais family. She made learning to read exciting, interesting and fun. When the school and the parents failed, Mary Jo knew the secret to teaching boys and girls to read and enjoy it for life.
We have the memories of the Twins games with Mary Jo and Betty. When you went to a game with her you just might end up with your picture on the scoreboard. She made things happen.
Someone else came up with the phrase I think captures her spirit and the meaning of her life. Mary Jo Cummings was Crazy Generous. That's how I will remember her.

I am so sad to hear of Mary Jo passing. We were 3rd cousins and shared the same birthday. No matter how much time had past, when we saw each other she'd say "Hi Cuz". I attended grade school and high school with her and always loved her sense of humor. Reading her legacy makes me want to be a better person. My prays go out to all who loved her.

She was my son's teacher. She taught those children more than their abc's! She taught them life-long lessons about kindness, love for mankind, and perseverance. My favorite phrase of her's...."you get what you get, and don't throw a fit." Thank you Mary Jo! You were earth's angle to our children.

An incredible loss. With heavy heart we grieve not only for the students blessed to have had Ms. Cummings, but also for those that will never have the experience of being in Ms. Cummings classroom. She believed in every student she taught and pushed each to reach his or her full potential.
