One the more gracious people I met back in the day with a Disability. He was a very determined soul and always had words of encouragement and care. The first time I met him was 1980 at the Courage Center and he walked into the gym with a cane, later I found out that he had polio, at the time we had 4 basketball players on the Rolling Gophers team that had the same. Doc Owen is missed by many, may he Rest in Peace!!!

Dear family,

I only recently learned of Dr. Owen's death from our mutual brace orthotist. I am very sad, somehow I had hoped to see him again after his final retirement. I saw him for 20 + years and leaned on his vision, humor, wisdom and kindness, all rare in the medical world which has always been in my life. It would be my pleasure to say more in some other format. My thoughts and prayers go with you all.

Your dad your husband was one of the few good guys out there. Aways made me smile. Always being the best that he can be. Please know if you need anything ever please call me. I love you all, and may trouble be looking down on us with his wonderful smile while drinking his wine and eating his salmon.

My son has spinal muscular atrophy. He started seeing Dr. Owen at Sister Kenny at the age of 3. Whenever we had an appointment, my son was like he was going to see Grandpa and Dr. Owen loved seeing him! He made a big difference in how we dealt with the diagnosis. I will never forget the words he told me when Steve was 6 - "Don't worry about him, with his personality and today's technology, he is going do just fine!" How right he was. Steve is now 33, married, part-owner of a PCA business and has been coaching adaptive sports for Robbinsdale Schools for 15 years! He has won numerous awards and is even in the Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame in Boise, Idaho! All though Steve's life, I am constantly reminded by Dr. Owen's words and how right he was! He really made a huge diffence in how we live with the diagnosis - and for Steve' sister too, who was also seen by Dr. Owen with the same diagnosis. He was a kind, wonderful man!

My daughter, Patty, and I first met Richard Owen in 1962, when she was two. Patty had had cerebral palsy since birth and Dr. Owen gave us guidance when she entered Curative Workshop Nursery where she experienced his gentle care and that of the many wonderful therapists who worked with him. Patty learned to managed her disabilities and to live independently. Both she and I will always be grateful for having known Richard Owen and for feeling his strong, cheerful, and humorous encouragemnent with the challenges in our lives. We will always feel his spirit with us as we assume you will. What a great human being and how fortunate we have been to share his gifts.

Amy,
It has been over 20 years since I visited you guys in Minneapolis. Regrettably our family extends so far and there are today so many of us, we lose contact.
My thoughts are with you as we share this with Dick's Aunt Betty who is in her 92nd year. I'm thankful that Cousin Neel just forwarded this notice to me today.

Amy,Marnie,Rick & Don,
My years of knowing doc and you all goes way back and are remembered like they were not that long ago, Since leaving SKI I didn't get to see doc much but have always thought of how he taught me so much and was such a loving and caring friend. His calm, gentleness was an example to us all.
He touched Helen as a work colleague and friend, Melissa, whom he checked out after she fell chasing a basketball in the gym one night when she was little and Erica when she did a interview with him while in HS.

He touched me in many ways as a teacher, colleague, teammate and friend. Wishing I could have been at the celebration but I was in thought. Thanks for all you were/are to our family

It was a privilege to get to know Dick and Amy as our company provided care for him this past year. I could only imagine that he was a wonderful doctor in his younger years. Such a gentle, thoughtful man with occasional humorous quips. Having my own Corgi made for lots of fun sharing stories about our dog's antics. He will definitely be missed!

Dick was a real gentleman and I respected his help and intellect as vice president to my president of the Friends of the Andersen Horticultural Library. He will be greatly missed.

It was my honor to meet and get to know and adore Dick Owen when he, Amy and Marnie joined the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis several years ago. A man of intelligence, humor and wisdom, Dick was much loved and admired. He added such a quick wit and dry humor to many small group gatherings that I was privileged to regularly see him at. I will miss him so much.
My heartfelt sympathy to Amy, Marnie, Rick, Don and all members of the extended Owen family.

Dr. Owen was a gentle soul, and a steady, guide. He offered me medical "care" in the deepest sense of the word, during the 1960s. Dr. Owen offered the essence of quiet dignity. May you be comforted by a spirit of peace.

Dr. Owen was one of the finest men I ever knew. He had a profound impact on me, both in choosing my profession and simply in being a person.
As a child, I had two uncles named Dick. When I found out he was not also my uncle, I was crushed. He was my favorite!!
My deepest sympathies to you Amy, as well as Marnie, Rick and Don. You all have a very special place in my heart.
