Dear Inge,
Please accept my condolences to you and your family on Henry's death. He was able to translate old German letters for me, which were important to my research into Hitler Youth and evil. Those letters and his book became an inspiration for me in my writing about that evil, and the impact on one's family. I'm sorry he won't be able to see the result and hear me thank him once more.
Sincerely,
Rev. Kristin D. Anderson

We are deeply saddened at the news of Henry's death, yet aware we are far richer for having known him the time that was allowed us. God's blessings to the Oertelt family, and thank you for sharing him with us.

Henry was a beloved man who I had the honor of meeting several times in my life. Meeting him and hearing his story changed my life in so many ways. He was a remarkable man and will be missed but his memory will always be with me.

Dear Oertelt Family,
I only today found out about Henry's death. Henry changed the lives of so many of my students over many years. He has been my inspiration to teach young people about the dangers of hate and that instead of hating each other, they should hate hate. I will miss you my dear friend. Rest assured that your story and message will live on.

Inge and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Henry was my mentor at Prudential in the 1970's and had a big impact in my life. Later I was able to help him enjoy some fishing. Then I moved away. Many years later he spoke at Pillsbury where my wife worked and we reconnected. I admired his humor, his dedication to helping others and to his family. He will be missed by many.

So sorry to hear Mr. Oertelt has passed. I never met him, but felt I knew him after reading his book, which a friend gave me to read a few days before the Super Bowl, 2010. I thought I would read a chapter before the game; yet, so moving was the narrative of Henry's survival and eventual arrival in America, I could not put the book down. I will never forget spending that afternoon "with" Henry.

I was fortunate to meet Henry when he agreed to speak to my history class at Central High School about his Holocaust experiences. He returned several times, and my students were always moved by his wisdom, compassion and surprising lack of hate.
The world is truly a better place because we were graced with his presence. I feel so fortunate that I got to meet him. He will be truly missed.

I'm sorry to hear of his passing. I was fortunate enough to hear him speak at the U in 2001. What a remarkable story; what an extraordinary man. Peace be with the family of Mr. Oertelt.
