Philip Raup Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 24 to Jul. 25, 2011.
Raup, Dr. Philip M. of St. Paul, Minnesota, died on July 21 at the age of 97. He was a professor in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota, from 1953 until 1984. Dr. Raup was an internationally recognized expert in land use policy, with a particular focus on the Soviet Union, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and North Africa. He was a forceful champion of the family farm and persuasively advocated policies designed to protect the family farm against encroachments by large corporate farming. Philip Raup was born and raised on a farm in western Kansas in January 1914. He received a BA in economics from the University of Kansas in 1939, followed by an MA (1941) and PhD (1949) in agricultural economics from the University of Wisconsin. Professor Raup mentored several generations of graduate students who are now dispersed across the globe in places as diverse as Nigeria, China, and Germany, including six who served at the World Bank. Philip Raup married Marian Louise Getter in 1941, and was rarely separated from her during their 68 years of marriage. They were active in the Twin Cities Alliance Française (where Marian was a past President), the United Nations Association of Minnesota, and the St. Anthony Park United Church of Christ. He is survived by his three children, Philip Jr. (Marjorie), Martha (Diane) and Gordon (Sandra), by his grandchildren Christopher Raup (Donna), Kaarin MacKinnon (Tom) and Joseph Ward and by great grandchildren Cosima Raup Hill and Roswell MacKinnon. Another grandson, David Raup, died in 1994. Phil Raup will be missed by the hundreds of former students, associates, colleagues, neighbors and family members whose lives he enriched. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm on Saturday, July 30, at the Roseville Memorial Chapel, 2245 Hamline Ave N, Roseville, and from 1 to 2 pm on Sunday, July 31 at the St. Anthony Park United Church of Christ, 2129 Commonwealth Avenue, St. Paul. Memorial Services will be held at the church at 2 pm on Sunday, July 31, with interment at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis the following morning at 9am. ROSEVILLE MEMORIAL 651-631-2727

Reading of the leading role of Philip Raup n Germany after the war
concerning food supply and agricultural structures
I feel a great thankfulness.
There must be a great thankfulness of German people to him.

Reading from his struggle for family farms and his continuous work
for enduring structures in agriculture in America, Russia, Western Europe, worldwide, until his death in 2011,
I think he is exemplary for politics of today.

Reading from the activities of his wife Marian and him in the Alliance Franc, aise,
I also feel very related.

Seeing the photo of Philip Raup
and his friendly forget-me-not blue eyes
I remember the same blue eyes of my father Walter Georg Raupp,
always caring for us and for others,
lovinig his trees, his fields and his wood,
and whose father Johannes was a farmer.

I sat next to Dr. Raup at many of the Ag Issues Roundtable luncheons that the Applied Economics department used to host. It got to the point where we would always search each other out to make sure we sat at the same table. Our conversations were always very entertaining and fascinating. Having traveled to Russia myself on a USDA project in 1994, I enjoyed trading observations with him. Dr. Raup was a true citizen of the world. He was also a delightful gentleman and a true giant in the ag economics profession. I feel honored to have made his acquaintance. His presence will be deeply missed. My condolences to his family and friends.

I always enjoyed conversations and thoughts from uncle phil. I could sit and listen to my grandfather and he talk at the farm about anything. He will be remembered as a caring man who made you feel important and that whatever you had to say was as important. We will miss you uncle Phil. Love always, Ryan,Kim, Savannah,Madeline and Jonathan.

Dear Martha,
It was my good fortune on the day I went to interview your father for the University Grove newsletter in the fall of 2002. Typically, I spend 1.5-2 hours interviewing my profile candidates but after spending an afternoon with him plus another two days, I learned what remarkable parents you had, and your dad and I became fast friends. I later nurtured a relationship with your mom when we were both in the UM Women's Club. While your dad received many accolades, his love for Marian was enduring. When we finally finished that interview, he pointed to Marian across the room, and said she should be interviewed, too, for her loving support and own accomplishments. Truly a couple to admire. Martha, I'm so glad to have met you now and be able to see both of your parents in you!
Peace to you and your family,
Karen

Dear Martha, Phil Jr. And Gordon,

There is great sadness in our hearts as we heard of Phil’s passing. We extend our deepest sympathy to you and your families, and our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Phil was an exceptional person and one of the very few true cosmopolitan Americans, yet at heart he remained always a farmer. His brilliant and analytical mind, inquisitive nature, multidisciplinary approach towards economics, in-depth knowledge and understanding of international affairs, combined with his compassion for his students and ability to bring out the best of our academic capabilities made him a remarkable teacher and graduate adviser who shaped my life for ever and for which I am eternally thankful. As a Fulbright Scholar from Austria, I came to Minnesota and was privileged to study under Phil and have him as my adviser for the Masters Program. My years at Haecker Hall in St. Paul were the most academically formative in my life and prepared me well for my subsequent long career in the World Bank. After Nancy and I left Minnesota we cherished the annual Christmas letters of Phil and Marian and their occasional visit to our homes in Austria and Virginia. Particularly memorable was Marian and Phil’s last visit and discussions over a glass of wine of Phil’s time in Germany after the war and his outlook for European agriculture as the EU started to expand to new members of the former Soviet empire. Marian and Phil were always inspiring, in many aspects of life, and their mutual devotion to their marriage bond became an example for our marriage which was formed in Minnesota.

Phil, thanks for having been my teacher. You will be missed, but always have a special place in our minds and hearts.

After three trips to the Soviet Union, I felt I knew him well. After the third trip, Marian and Phil and Lois and I would go to lunch together, many times actually. When the Raups had dinner, it was a special affair. All who knew Phil will miss him.

I was on the faculty with Phil from 1990-1999. It was always so much fun being with him. He was so enthusiastic about learning, had a real wisdom. He was so knowledgeable and connected so many things that his insights and intuition were amazing. But, he also had a great sense of humor and that impish grin I loved. I see him in the Cherrywood Room on the St. Paul campus or in his office with so much archival material that he could navigate well. After we left Minnesota, we've moved around a bit. I called Phil from Cincinnati a couple of years ago. It was before Marian passed. He was worried about her. But, he also wanted to talk about Cincinnati which he knew a lot about. Why doesn't this surprise me? He was a wonderful man. I will miss getting his holiday newsletters that were part family stories and an op-ed essay.

Phil Raup was more than a professor, a colleague and a friend. He was an institution in himself. He helped to define the Department of Agriculture and Applied Economics and gave it its character, its decency and stature. He will truly be missed, but not forgotten.

And you, Martha, are to be admired for all the help and companionship you have given him for many years. We pray you and your family will find peace in knowing what a great legacy Phil Raup leaves us.

Best wishes, Jean Kinsey and Frank Busta

Martha and Family,

Ellie and I send our condolences to all of you. We considered Phil and Marian as friends and always delighted in seeing them in venues such as the Alliance Française (for Marian) or the Committee on Foreign Relations or related events (for Phil). We don't have too many friends of their generation, but they were both so active and both interested and interesting that the difference in ages was not perceptible. We'll miss Phil in our lives!

Dear Martha and family,

My Sincerest Condolences to you all on the passing of your father. I have always been most privileged Professor Raup accepted me in the department in the 60s and guided me through the fieldwork, thesis and MS degree. Those memorable one-on-one sessions with your father provided me a career foundation; and he most generously wrote a letter on my behalf to Cornell where I was honored to complete my PhD in land and regional economics. As was his style and ever crisply stated "clarity of thought and precision of expression" – remains a fresh guiding principle for me. Several decades later I was delighted to meet with Phil at several events including The Philip M. Raup Lectures on Land and Environmental Policy. These were wonderful and lively, wide-ranging and in-depth exchanges on key issues which Phil had instant recall of past and current references on complicated global, specific countries, domestic and local situations. Phil epitomized the absolute best in American and worldwide educational standards; forever inquisitive, not doctrinaire, multidisciplinary, demanding rigor, having a thorough foundation and always looking forward, invariably stimulating – but above all motivating and encouraging each person to develop their own way as they found their own path. Dr. Raup's joie de vivre, compassion and concern for complex realities, and each person are most wonderful gifts to all of us.

Wish deep sympathy,

Linda Hall

Dear Martha and family,

You may know that your dad came to the June 5th UGrove picnic. He was a big hit. This was my first and last meeting with your delightful father. He had such a light in his eyes; I was totally charmed by him as was everyone else at the picnic. My impression was of a man completely engaged with and by life and, as I read here, who influenced and touched many others. Congratulations and condolences.

Sincerely,

I am saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Phil Raup, one of my great teachers and mentors at the University of Minnesota. For more than half a century, Phil Raup remained an active and caring educator for international graduate students, such as myself, who sought out his knowledge. Long before the time of computers, Phil Raup was a living encyclopedia of knowledge which he generously gave to all who knew him. An institution of learning, like the University of Minnesota, owes its reputation to extraordinary individuals like Phil Raup. He will be remembered by generations of students with pride and appreciation.

Martha,
We are all thinking of you at this trying time. Take comfort in knowing that your dad lived a very "EXTRAORDINARY" life. After reading all his accomplishments, it is easy to see that he was one of a kind. I don't think there are many people in this world that could even come close to all he's done. What an interesting person he must have been! I know you must be beaming with pride for him.
Our love and prayers are with you.

Dear Martha, Phil Jr., and Gordon--We are so sorry to hear of Uncle Phil's passing, but celebrate with you the long, productive, and inspiring life he lead. We enjoyed visiting your mom and dad at their home in St. Paul several years ago. They were both real blessings to their friends and family. We will miss them, but know that they are together again and at peace.

Philip, Gordon and Martha, thank you for all you have done for your parents in their final years (especially Martha since they were at Surise). Marion had been close to Flossie through the UMWC and was loved by all. Phil dealt with Sunrise living as he had with professional issues throughout his career, and Elwood valued his continued active participation in the St. Paul Retirees until the end. We both will sorely miss them both.

My first knowledge of Philip Raup was as my teacher. He taught the architecture course on urbanism and inspired us all to know more about the causes of our urban ills. I especially remember his wonderful argumentation of issues using statistics as a guide. It was an early exposure to the value of research in environmental questions.

More recently I have known Philip as a colleague in the Gown and Town faculty group, where he charmed us all with his stories that made important points in an amusing and usually powerful way.

But the most impressive thing about Philip Raup was not his brilliance, although it was remarkable, but his kindness and concern to make this a better world. He set an example for us all to follow.

Phil and Marion have been part of my life for over 70 years. I am so happy our family was able to get together for our Family Reunion several years ago in Washington DC. Phil and Marion were the only aunts and uncles attending, and it was great spending that time with them. Martha, Gordon and Phil Jr have been blessed to have had them in their lives all these years.

Dear family,

I want you to know that Elsa and I owe a lot to Phil and Marian, and we have always kept them in our thoughts and we will continue to do so. As a graduate adviser and later as PhD thesis adviser he was a constant guide including visits to us when I was doing field work in Greece and Tunisia. Later, he was instrumental in getting me interviewed by the World Bank where I spent most of my career. Through his correspondence we were able to keep up with his activities until just a few years ago which were always of interest to us. When we were at St. Paul he and Marian had us at their home at many occasions. His original thoughts and principled positions on important issues will be remembered for the rest of our lives. In this and other ways he left a lasting mark.

Working with Dr. Raup on the 1986 edition of his annual Minnesota farmland value report and taking his land economics class then were privileges I will always appreciate. I am especially grateful for the several stimulating visits with him since then. The perspective he shared on personal opportunities I had as well as on more consequential political and economic events of the day were both inspired and inspiring.

My daughter Lisa visited Phil last winter to interview him about post-war Berlin for a junior high history project. He told the story about finding spinach seeds to plant in July for a quick harvest, and about the eerie silence when the airlift planes stopped flying low over Berlin. Kind, gentle, knowledgeable, generous, always a scholar. I'll also remember how deeply in love he always was with the lovely Marian. Our condolences to you.
