Terry Thompson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 23, 2011.
Thompson, Terry J. Born Sept. 6, 1941, in Buffalo, NY, Terry Thompson died Sept. 29, 2011, in Minneapolis. Left to cherish good memories are his wife, Lynne; daughter, Kristin Mannoni; her husband, Paolo; and grandson, Luca. Terry will be dearly missed as well by his brother, Michael; sister, Sheila Guenther; other family members and friends. An award-winning writer, Terry was also a teacher and community volunteer. He earned his bachelor's degree from Colgate University and a master's degree from the Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University. He attended Harvard University's business school as a Bush Foundation fellow and graduated with a master's of fine arts degree from Hamline University. Terry worked at well-known consumer goods companies -- Fisher- Price Toys, Quaker Oats, General Mills and Pillsbury -- for more than 25 years. After 10 years (1989-1999) with Pillsbury as vice president of public affairs, he joined Minnesota's department of administration as communications director, and he was named special assistant to the commissioner a year later. Terry left government to write full-time. He contributed regularly to regional and national publications. He served as board chair of the Loft Literary Center, president of the Minnesota News Council and chair of the advisors group for PPL (Project for Pride in Living). He also served on the boards of Metropolitan State University, Vail Place and Citizens for a Loring Park Community. He was chair of the communications board, Grocery Manufacturers of America, and chair of the advisory board of The Public Relations Strategist. Terry was an adjunct instructor in the graduate school of the business college, University of St. Thomas. Everyone who knew Terry will remember his warmth, easy laugh and, above all else, his sincere interest in others. He was passionate about good writing, music, political debate and baseball. Mental illness was the enemy Terry could not beat. A private service was held.

Terry and I became best friends at Fisher-Price Toys. He was a wonderful person, very smart and humorous. I always he was the only intellectual I know. He was a great writer and speaker. I miss him to this day in 2018.

He used to stop by our home in Snyder and Pixie and I always enjoyed his visits. Love you, Ter!!!!

I, along with John Boylan, will forever miss our dear friend of close to 65 years.

Terry was one of the most influential persons of my life, from guiding me to graduate school at Syracuse and to teaching positions at School 67 in South Buffalo to a job with The Buffalo Evening News as a copy editor and reporter. Our lives were similar in communications experiences. We have remained lifelong friends, and I'll never forget his good humor, intelligence and loyalty. My love to his wife, Lynne, daughter, Kristin and family.

Terry was my oldest friend. We met in First Grade at Christ the King School in Snyder, NY, and during grammar school we were inseparable. After college, we went our separate ways, but very happily, we reconnected again at a school reunion in 1995, and then again when I was playing a concert in Minneapolis in 2004. At that time, he graciously took me to lunch and then brought his lovely wife, Lynne, and another Buffalo friend to the concert. After that, we corresponded regularly by e-mail, discussing mostly music and politics. I feel a terrible sense of loss, and I send my heartfelt condolences to his family. I will miss him greatly.

Terry was a good friend years ago. We attended Christ the King grade school and St. Joe's together. His classmates and Buffalo friends will be saddened by his death.

The three Jaye boys will never forget Terry's uncommon kindness and generosity. Terry, with wife Lynne, babysat them, took them to the zoo, attended their school musical performances and sent them personal notes from several of his travels with Lynne. Terry was a special man, and my family will always be thankful for the gift of knowing him.

October 23, 2011

Terry was one of my life's heroes because he had a Maxon Cadillac jacket with real leather sleeves while he was still in grammar school! That, and he was a terrific guy. I got to know him better after college when he was writing poetry--and he gave me a copy of his poems while telling me not to mention it to other people, perhaps too sensitive about his writing at that time. But I felt honored that he would give me a copy (he knew I was interested in writing). Truly an inspiration. John Mehringer--3 years behind Terry at Christ the King.
