James Serrin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 26 to Aug. 29, 2012.
Serrin, James B. A Regents' Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota, died at his home in Minneapolis on Thursday, August 23rd, at the age of 85 due to congestive heart failure. Professor Serrin earned his Ph.D. from the University of Indiana in 1951 and came to Minnesota in 1954 after having been a C.L.E. Moore Instructor at MIT and a Fine Instructor of Mathematics at Princeton University. From 1964 to 1965 he was the Head of the School of Mathematics at Minnesota, and was made a Regents' Professor in 1969. Serrin was known throughout the world for his fundamental research on the properties of basic mathematical models for the flow of gases and liquids, and for the mechanical and thermodynamical behavior of materials. He was a member of the National Academy of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as a foreign member of both the Finnish Academy of Sciences and the "Academia dei Lincei" in Rome. Among his other achievements, he received G.D. Birkhoff Prize in Applied Mathematics in 1973, and was awarded honorary doctorates by four European universities. Even after his retirement in 1995, and as recently as May of this year, Professor Serrin continued to do celebrated research, present at conferences and collaborate on published materials. In his personal life James Serrin had a love of beauty and a deep appreciation for the great works of music, art, architecture and literature, along with a love of ideas and a tremendous regard for the life of the mind. He traveled extensively to visit his family and friends as well as opening his home for many formal and informal occasions, welcoming friends, colleagues and acquaintances to share conversation and a glass of lemonade. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Barbara Serrin, and his three daughters, Martha Stack, Elizabeth Conley, and Janet Sucha, all of whom were present at his passing. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Isabel Sucha, Spencer Sucha, Julian Conley, and Chloë Conley, his sons-in-law, Christopher Stack, Charles Conley, and Frank Sucha, as well as by his brother Richard Serrin, his sister-in-law, Dorothy Serrin, and his nieces, Saskia Serrin and Aletta Mutz. He was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral service Friday, August 31, 2012, 1 PM at Minnehaha Church, 3701 E 50th St, Mpls. Visitation Thursday, 7-9 PM at Nokomis Park Chapel, 1838 E. Minnehaha Pkwy, and one hour prior to service at church. Burial at Lakewood Cemetery. Memorials preferred to the donor's favorite charity. www.Washburn-McReavy.com Nokomis Park Chapel 612-721-1651

It was almost eight years ago and we remember so much his fortunate life and mathematics. I will not forget the years in Minneapolis, full of partial differential equations and so many good things.

Dear Jim, You are my hero in my life. I love you.

September 25, 2012

I am deeply saddened to learn that one of the greatest mathematical scientists, with such a rare taste for elegance, and so helpful with younger scientists, will no longer be able to answer my mails.

My condolences to his family,

Dear Barbara,
I am deeply saddened to learn of Jim's passing; my deepest condolences to you and the family. Jim was a great mathematician who profoundly influenced the field of elliptic pde and applications. I got to know him better over the years starting from my years as Ass't Prof. at UMN in 1974. Underneath his somewhat reserved and wry midwestern visage, he was a passionate man for all the finer things in life. He pursued excellence with all his force and was incredibly successful in all his pursuits. We all will miss him.
Sincerely,
Joel Spruck

Dear Mrs. Serrin, my condolences to you and your family. I remember your husband as a great mathematician, who inspired and encouraged me and many others so much. Forever I will remember his friendly and charismatic way of speaking to me on the first time we met. I am very grateful for having met James Serrin and I will treasure the memories of my time as his postdoc in 1996/97. With great respect, Wolfgang Reichel

Dear Jim, I was deeply saddened to learn of your death. I have such sweet memories of our many lunches at the Campus Club where we shared feelings and thoughts about our families, the world, art, music, the University, our religions and other such things that matter. I will miss you deeply.
Dear God in heaven, I'm sure you have welcomed this dear, smart, loving man to your firmament where he can extend his earthly mortality whence he enriched your world, to immortality where he will continue proving theorems with Fermat, Leibnitz and Newton. We who survive here are poorer for his loss. Marty Dworkin

Dear Barbara and family: what an honor for me to know such an honest, loving, caring man for as long as I can remember! He was so clear and supportive about how much he loved my parents. He gave me adult conversation from about age 10 onward.
And that was a compliment from a PhD professor! I'm sorry I did not hear about Jim's passing until today and I'm writing while you are at Minnehaha. Blessed Be, Steve Coll

I would like to express my condolences to James Serrin's family. I will always remember its deep generosity and its humanity. He was a "magister" in mathematics for many of us, including me, but I also remember many stimulating discussions about politics, history and many different areas of culture. I will miss him like a member of my family.

Dear Jim, You are my best teacher and best friend who speak English. Your appreciation of my work back in 1996 and your recommendation have helped change my academic life since then. I have been deeply saddened because of your leaving. I have wished it would not happen so soon, and hate to see it happened.

It is impossible to describe how much I love you. As your post doc student, I had been luck to study under your supervision for four years in Minnesota. You showed my how happiness and enjoyment arise from hard work and concentration, how innovative ideas come from hard work, and how a clear presentation of ideas comes from repeated revision and modification.

There have been many memorable moments with you and Barbara. I and my wife had spent many weekend evenings with you in your house or local restaurants. Very often, we drove to the Far East restaurant in France Ave in Minneapolis. You liked the Beijing duck there very much --- sure, the duck tests really good, as good as those in Beijing. One time, you drove us to look through a fancy neighborhood near France Ave., showed us the house you and Barbara planned to buy many years ago. You told “Moxun, if you can prove more theorems, then you will get a fancy house like you see here”. My answer was
“Jim, if I plan to have a house like one of those, then I may have to stop proving theorems”. Hopefully, now we have brought a house in Michigan, and I am still proving theorems.

Last time I saw you was three years ago. I and my wife took our two children from Lansing, MI to Minneapolis to see you and Barbara. It was July, 3, 2009.
You and Barbara smiled in our picture in the porch, Martha stood behind you.
Now I will not have the chance to see you smiling again in Minneapolis. However, you will live forever in my heart, and whenever I think of you, you smile.

Dear Barbara, Martha, Elizabeth and Janet - Jim was a great man and his artistic legacy will live on through all of you. As friends, we will miss his provocative poolside/dinner table debates, quick wit, and love of the beautiful things in life. We were all blessed to know him. Deepest sympathy from all of us. -Diane, Jean-Philippe, Max & Hugo
