Graves, Walter Thomas age 93, died peacefully Friday, December 21, 2012 of pulmonary fibrosis at the N.C. Little Hospice in Edina, MN. Dr. Graves was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 28 years, Gladys Dedrick Graves, parents Edward Joseph and Ellen (O'Brien) Graves, and brother Edward Francis Graves. He is survived by nephew Thomas Walter (Trudy) Graves, nieces Mary (Nicholas) Tilney, Virginia (Richard) Carroll, and Frances (Kenneth) Menz; stepson Martin Kleckner III, his wife Victoria and their children Ashley and Martin IV; grand-niece Ellen (Peter) Demerath and children Olivia and Sophia; dear friends David and Rosemary Andersen, and many other relatives and close friends. Born in Minneapolis, Dr. Graves graduated from DeLaSalle High School and attended the University of Minnesota, receiving bachelors', masters', and doctoral degrees in Civil Engineering, before joining the faculty of the University of Minnesota. During his career as a structural engineer, including World War II Army service at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, he lead structural analysis of fighter aircraft such as the F100 Super Sabre, and designed highway bridges and buildings in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Walter and Gladys were married in 1980, living together in the Graves family home on Lake Harriet, in Carlsbad, CA, and in Edina; there was nothing he loved more than to enjoy with her a quiet candlelight dinner at home. Dr. Graves was a life-long and much-beloved parishioner at Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Minneapolis. He will always be remembered for his intelligence, his sharp wit, and his good cheer, no matter the circumstances. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am December 29, 2012 at Saint Thomas the Apostle Church, 2914 W. 44th Street Minneapolis, MN 55410, with Visitation at the church one hour prior to Mass. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery. Walter's family is grateful to the many people who cared for and supported Walter, including the staff at N.C.
