Backberg, Leroy Chris Age 88, of Oakdale, died June 18, 2012. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Florence, their infant son, Barry, and his brother, Melvin. Born October 8, 1923 to Jonas L. and Christine Backberg in Staples, MN. Leroy exemplified the small town values of his upbringing. He loved God, family, volunteering, singing, walking, sports, and rowing his boat. He treasured family time and found special joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Roy graduated from Staples High School. He was in the Army during WWII, and, while on a leave, he married his sweetheart, Florence Anvid. They shared 65 beautiful years of love and devotion. Together they raised four children--Brian, Bruce, Bonnie, and Blaine. Roy's 35 year career with Lutheran Brotherhood successfully combined his religious values and financial acumen. Roy and Flo lived in many locations, but "home" was on the lake in Alexandria. There they shared their love of birds, nature, and beautiful sunsets. Family will always remember fun times at the lake and Dad's passion for rowing. In addition to his children, Roy's family includes Kathy (Brian), Cindy (Bruce), Susan Daniels (Bonnie), and Mia (Blaine); 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; his sister, Lenore (Lowell) Christianson and sister-in-law, Ceil Backberg.
