Thomas Powell Obituary

Thomas "Joel" Powell, 54, of Swainsboro, died unexpectedly Wednesday, January 4, 2012.
He was the youngest son of the late Thomas J. "T.J." II and Iva "Skip" Rozzell Powell of Kite, Ga., and was born on January 1, 1958, in Swainsboro, Ga. Joel graduated from Washington-Johnson Community School, Harrison, Ga. He lived in the area, including Hinesville and Statesboro, all of his life. He was a past employee of Hooks Milling Co. and Thompson Outdoor Center in Swainsboro.
Joel is survived by his sister, Jan (Jerry) Cox, Claxton, Ga.; brother, Jerry (Jane) Powell, Prosperity, S.C.; nieces, Amanda P. (Scott) Sopko, Nikki Cox and Heather C. (Daniel) Burdges; nephew, Christopher "Chris" Powell; aunt, Arlie Kay P. Anderson; cousins, Chad, Todd and Tim Hutcheson; other relatives and numerous friends. He was a much loved brother, uncle, nephew and cousin.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to a charity of choice.
Visitation will be on Sunday, January 8, 2012, from noon to 1:30 p.m., followed by graveside service at 2 p.m. in the Kite City Cemetery, Kite, Ga. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Burton Dixon.
Pallbearers will be Chad Hutcheson, Todd Hutcheson, Tim Hutcheson, Keith Thompson, James Glisson and Milton Edenfield.
Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
