Lawrence Lucree Obituary

Monsignor Lawrence A. Lucree, 77, a priest in the Diocese of Savannah for over 50 years, died February 20 at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus after a long illness.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Americus with a reflection on the monsignor's life at 6:30 and a Vigil Service and Rosary at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 23.
A viewing will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 24, with burial in the Catholic Cemetery.
A native Savannahian, Monsignor Lucree was ordained at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah in 1960. He said when he became an altar server at the age of 7 he decided he wanted to become a priest, and he never changed his mind. He ministered in 10 different Georgia cities, including Savannah, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Columbus, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Augusta, St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Albany, St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Jesup, Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Valdosta, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Lakeland, St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Cordele, St. Matthew Parish in Statesboro and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Americus. He considered rural missions one of the most fulfilling aspects of his ministry. He established missions that became St. Boniface Catholic Church in Springfield and St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Buena Vista.
Another highlight was encouraging young Georgia men to consider pursuing a religious vocation. He also traveled to Colombia, South America, seeking to recruit candidates for the priesthood.
In 2008, he was honored by Pope Benedict XVI when he was given the title of "Monsignor".
In lieu of flowers, St. Mary's Catholic Church suggests memorial contributions to the Priest Retirement Fund, 601 East Liberty Street, Savannah, GA 31401.

Not sure what to say?

I always grew up being told stories of how great Monsignor Lawrence Lucree was and how my father was named after him. I still remember the picture of my father and Monsignor Lawrence Lucree hanging proudly in his storefront in Augusta Ga.

I met MSGR. Lawrence LUCREE in Columbus, Ga in 1961 when my wife and I became his first wedding and again when he said a private mass in Americus for our 50th anniversary in Feb 2011. We had a wonderful lunch and conversation with him, learning about the early years of his priesthood. What a wonderful man of God. He will be missed but he is in a better place, free of pain.

Dear Bishops Boland and Hartmayer, Fr. Joe Smith and priests of the Diocese, family and friends,
I am saddened at the passing of Msgr. Lucree and joyful for his reception into Heaven. I was honored to work with Msgr. as St. Boniface was founded as a Catholic presence in Effingham county. May my late wife Denise, Msgr. Burke, Frs. John O'Brien and Mike Burke, and others having gone before us welcome Msgr. Lucree into Heaven and his reward for a life of service to the people of South Georgia.

The world is a better place because of your never ending devotion to serving your fellow man. I knew you before you were ordained, I knew you as a priest, you married Cam and myself in 1968. You were the parish priest in Valdosta in the 1990's when my son was attending college there. Although we have been separated by many miles, we grew up together. A very heavenly voice has been added to the choir in heaven. Dear friend, please rest in God's Eternal Peace.

I too will always remember you. We had such good times in the 60's with day trips for the altar servers to Jekyll Island to the beach, dinners at Williams Seafood with Mom and movies. You married me, you healed me through divorce, you had so much strength and love for us. You got me into BC and the KOC. Now you and Mom can resume the card games.I know you rest with the Best. Thank You, dear friend.

I will always remember you. From my days at Cathedral Day School, through the time of the first catholic mission in Effingham County and when you came into our home and broke bread with us. Your blessing of our home had significance then as it does now. You will always be remembered.

Peace and condolences to the Lucree Family. I was an altar server at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah, GA, when Msgr. Lucree was rector there. In addition to being an outstanding priest and confessor, he was a great organist and singer. For some reason, he gravitated to the organ in the chapel instead of the main church, and often I would see him as the organist for Mass while his brother priests celebrated the Eucharist. I am most grateful for his many years of service to the Church in Savannah, including his powerful music ministry!

May perpetualm light shine on Magr Lawrence A Lucree, for his Spirit was big and His love automatic, his humor spontaneous, his service genuine, his ministry as a catholic priest authentic and his love of all missions and parishes he served renowned. May God grant him a high place among the angels and saints forevermore! From Fr Michael Lubinsky Most Holy Trinity Augusta GA P.S. Fr Larry preached at my first Mass at Saint Matthew's Church in Stateboro GA on June 11, 1978 and told me to stay close to Jesus and Jesus would stay close to me. Profound words!!!

JUDY AND I WERE DEEPLY SADDENED TO HEAR OF MSGR. LARRY LUCREE'S DEATH, AND OFFER OUR SINCERE SYMPATHY AT THIS HUGE LOSS TO THE ENTIRE CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF SAVANNAH.

MSGR. AND I GREW UP TOGETHER IN THE SHADOWS OF OUR BEAUTIFUL CATHEDRAL IN SAVANNAH, ATTENDED CATHEDRAL SCHOOL AND BENEDICTINE MILITARY SCHOOL AND WERE ALTER SERVERS OVER SO MANY HAPPY AND GREAT TIMES IN OUR YOUTH.
ALTHOUGH WE WERE SEPARATED BY TIME AND DISTANCE FOR SO MANY YEARS, HE WAS ,MOST SPECIAL, AS A FRIEND AND A HOLY PRIEST TO ME AND SO MANY OTHERS FROM THOSE EARLY YEARS SOME 70 PLUS YEARS AGO.

MSGR.HAD A INDURING AND SPECIAL DEVOTION TO OUR LADY, THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION HAVING BEEN SO INSPIRED BY THE CHAPEL DEDICATED TO HER IN THE CATHEDRAL BASEMENT WERE HE SPENT MUCH TIME IN PRAYER. MAY HE NOW ENJOY THE PRESENCE OF OUR BLESSED LORD AND MARY IMMACULATE FOREVER. WITH LOVE, JACK

Fr. Larry is enjoying the fruits of his earthly labors. A friend to all and always found a moment to listen to everyone.
Years ago, I found I'd rather go to his noon Mass than take my lunch hour from work. My soul got fed and the body could wait for a while.
Fr. Larry, thank you.
