Cecil Hagans Obituary

STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mr. Cecil E. Hagans, age 91, died on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was born on September 16, 1922, to James "Mike" Hagans and Eliza Spence Hagans. Like so many citizens of Bulloch County in that era, the Hagans were a rural family and lived on and farmed lands near the Register community. Mr. Hagans attended the Westside School and graduated from the Register High School. When he reached adulthood, Mr. Hagans moved to Statesboro and went to work for the Alfred Dorman Wholesale Grocery Company. On December 24, 1941, Cecil married his childhood sweetheart, Avis Alderman, who remained his partner in life for 70 years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II as a platoon sergeant in Company F of the 255th Infantry Regiment. He participated in the Normandy Invasion in which he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. He spent the rest of his career in construction working for Jones Lane Construction for many years and retiring from Smith Supply Company. He was a longtime, faithful member of the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church for over 60 years, where he was active in the Frank Williams Sunday School Class and the Men's Brotherhood. He was also very involved in the adult softball program at the Statesboro Recreation Department. Mr. Hagans was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife, Avis Alderman Hagans; and his parents and several siblings.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Cecile H. and Ed Boulineau of Statesboro and Judy and Gerald Williams of Sylvania; three grandchildren, Lori B. Whitson (Greg) of Alpharetta, Lee Banks (Rhonda) of Evans and Heather B. McNeal (Ryan) of Statesboro; five great-grandchildren, Madison and Ansley Whitson, Charlie McNeal and Jackson and Riley Banks; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Alderman of Statesboro; his brother, Franklin Hagan (Shelvie) of Statesboro. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The visitation will be held on Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Randy Waters and W.H. Durrence officiating.
The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in Eastside Cemetery, with military honors.
Serving as pallbearers will be Lee Banks, Greg Whitson, Ryan McNeal, Brian Hagan, Frank Hook and Ralph Cowart.
Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Frank Williams Sunday School Class and the Men's Brotherhood.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 4 South Zetterower Avenue, Statesboro, Ga. 30458; or to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.
