STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mrs. Alma Lillian Fletcher Almand, "MeMa" to her grandchildren, age 72, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. Born in Ocilla, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Plemon and Nona Paulk Fletcher. Alma was a 1959 graduate of Irwin County High School and attended Berry College. She was employed for several years with Southern Bell in Tifton, Georgia. Alma moved to Statesboro and began her career with Statesboro Telephone Company, later becoming Frontier Communications, as a telephone operator. She retired in 2000 following over 30 years of dedicated service.
In 1962, she married Elton Almand. He preceded her in death in 1995. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Douglas Fletcher.
Mrs. Almand was a member of the Eastern Heights Baptist Church and also attended First Christian Church in Sylvania. She was a volunteer with the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Team.
The family would like to thank the staff of Brown's Health and Rehab for their excellent care of their mother.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Crystal Almand of Statesboro and Ronald and Ashley Almand of Savannah; a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Max Donaldson of Portal; two stepdaughters, Donna Samford of Lawrenceville and Debbie Almand of Watkinsville; three sisters, Maxine Harper and June Harper, both of Ocilla, and Linda Martin of Tifton; her grandchildren, Tyler Almand, Anslee Almand, Branden Almand, Raymond Almand, Laci Almand, Matthew Newsome, Daniel Donaldson, Joshua Donaldson and Griff Donaldson; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel with the Rev. George Pevey officiating. Interment will be in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, Ga. 30459.
