PORTAL, Ga. -- Mr. Don W. Taylor, age 83, died Sunday evening, October 28, 2012, at Heritage Inn Health and Rehabilitation. The Emanuel County native moved to Portal as a child and was a 1948 graduate of Portal High School. He was employed with Franklin Chevrolet as a salesman, where he was the used car manager for 17 years and was a Legion of Leaders salesman for 10 years. In 1972, he moved to Barnwell, S.C., and purchased the General Motors
dealership, which he operated until 1978. He and his family returned to Portal in 1978 and he owned and operated a used car dealership until his retirement. Don was an active member of the Portal United Methodist Church, where he chaired several committees over the years. He also formed the first Boy Scout troop and served as Scout Master at New Hope United Methodist Church and Portal United Methodist Church. He had been a member of the Elks Lodge
. Don loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He was preceded in death by his parents, F.L. ""Pete"" and Mary Lou Taylor.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Mary Deal Taylor of Portal; two daughters and a son-in-law, Shirley and J.D. Pascullis and Patsy Chaney, all of Portal; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald W. Taylor Jr. and Kim of Midland, Mich.; nine grandchildren, Lannette E. Williams (Eddie), Hannah E. Deal (Tracy) and Stephanie C. Baker (Jamie), all of Portal, John W. Gwinnett and Geoffrey T. Chaney (Cristle), all of Statesboro, Zachary Taylor (Nicole) of Fort Hood, Texas, and Kyle, Michael and David Taylor, all of Midland, Mich.; 11 great-grandchildren and a sister, Sara Eure of Mocksville, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
The funeral service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Fred Maddox officiating, assisted by the Rev. Larry Sauls.
Entombment will be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Portal United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 401, Portal, Ga. 30450.
